It needed just one match into the five match Test series between England and India to tell us why this series was one of the most anticipated.

A thriller at Edgbaston set the tone for the rest of the series and England take a 1-0 advantage to the second Test at Lord’s starting from Thursday, August 9.

With both sides grappling with inconsistencies and imbalances, key factors like the absence of Ben Stokes, weather forecast and pitch conditions could sway the result.

Match Preview

The 31-run win at Edgbaston was a deserved victory for England, although it was achieved on the back of a few individual performances. Teenage all-rounder Sam Curran impressed with his counter-punching knocks of 24 and 63 – more notably the second, that has helped England set a 193-run target and a fighting chance.

With the ball too, Curran impressed with 4/62 in the first innings that was the bedrock of their charge. Charismatic all-rounder Ben Stokes proved once again that he is the ‘crisis man’ for captain Joe Root picking up 2/73 and 4/40 – all at crucial junctures.

India had to depend on their captain and the world’s best Test batsman Virat Kohli, who scored a glorious 149 in the first innings to rally his side close to England’s score. Then in the second, India’s chase of 194 was on, until Kohli got out to Stokes after making 51.

The Indian bowling looked a lot better as they enjoyed a pitch that had something for every bowler. Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin did the star turn with figures of 4/62 and 3/59, while Ishant Sharma picked up 5/51 in the second-innings to prove that the Indian attack is capable of picking up 20 wickets.

England are troubled by batting inconsistencies and have responded by dropping Dawid Malan. Debutant Ollie Pope will look for a settled start, although against Ashwin and Ishant, that won’t be straightforward. The loss of Stokes could be offset by the recall of Chris Woakes.

Pitch conditions will also be a huge factor, as another dry surface could benefit the Indians. Both sides could look to play an additional spinner and that could make things interesting.

Key Players

With seamers doing all the damage, Adil Rashid was required only for 12 overs in the match, during which he took three wickets. The England leg-spinner will be more in focus at Lord’s.

Hailed as one of the best Indian batsman in overseas conditions, Ajinkya Rahane struggled at Edgbaston with knocks of 15 and 2. There definitely is pressure on the stylish middle-order batsman to get out of his slump. Can he do that?

Tips

Back the match to be a draw at odds of $4.75 (bet365)

Back Root to score a fifty in the match at odds of $1.72 (bet365).

Back Kohli to be India’s top 1st innings batsman at odds of $2.62 (Ladbrokes).
