England v India Cricket World Cup Tips, Predictions and Preview - England in must-win territory

It will be a blockbuster Sunday as the ‘at crossroads’ hosts England will take on red-hot unbeaten India in the 2019 ICC World Cup at Edgbaston, with a lot of teams interested in the result.

With eight points from seven matches, England are still in with a chance if they win their next two against India and New Zealand. Lose one and it would need help from other results around.

India remain the only unbeaten side in the tournament (11 points) and might need a win to confirm their position in the top-four.

England

After starting as favourites to win the title, the hosts have found the going tough after losing consecutive matches to Sri Lanka and Australia. Thankfully, their fate is still in their hands as two wins over India and New Zealand will see them through.

Opener Jason Roy could be set for a much-awaited comeback and that could be a great boost for England. Joe Root’s form augurs well for a side that needs the batsmen to step up. Bowling wise, Jofra Archer and Mark Wood will hope to put pressure on the Indians with their short-pitched stuff.

India

India remain the only unbeaten side in the tournament, after thumping Windies in their previous game. With Sri Lanka dropping to a loss against South Africa and their own positive NRR, it is safe to say that India are virtually through.

However, concerns remain over their batting that has been found out in the last two games. Over-dependence on Rohit Sharma & Virat Kohli, the lack of runs from their number four and a fumbling middle-order puts question marks over their long-term ambitions. With the ball, though, they remain a superlative unit.

Match Up

Both sets of bowlers will look to make their point, especially with the batsmen on either side looking a bit jittery. This could boil down to how well the nerves are managed and which set of batsmen put their hands up and stand to be counted. On the evidence of Pakistan vs New Zealand match played at the same venue, this pitch could take turn from ball one!

History & Statistics

  • England have lost their last two ODIs, but the last time they lost three home ODIs in a row was in 2014.
  • England have won 19 of 28 WC ODIs played in England.
  • England have not lost three WC ODIs in a row in the same edition since 1996.
  • England have won their last three ODIs at this venue.
  • India have won 16 of their last 17 WC ODIs.
  • India have not lost to England in WCs since 1992 (W2, T1).

Key Players

Knocks of 57, 30 & 48 as an opener speak of steady influence, but KL Rahul would need more. India will expect him to convert those into big scores and reduce the burden on Kohli.

Jonny Bairstow came down harsh on all those critics who questioned the team’s chances. The opener knows, though, that it is up to the playing XI to make sure there are no hiccups, especially from him as an opener.
