Pre-tournament favourites England will have all eyes on victory, as their future in the 2019 ICC World Cup hinges on this game against New Zealand in the last group match for both the sides at Chester-le-Street on Wednesday.

England got back to winning ways defeating India in their previous match. All that will count to nothing, if they can’t get past the Kiwis. New Zealand, on the other hand, are almost through to the semis. A loss could make things interesting, with Bangladesh and Pakistan lurking around.

England

The return of Jason Roy to the playing XI has worked wonders, as England reaped the benefits of Roy-Bairstow partnership at the top. Eoin Morgan’s batting form has dipped, but with Joe Root and Ben Stokes in good touch, England have a settled outlook.

Liam Plunkett’s addition has worked wonders to their bowling in the middle-overs. England will look to keep it tight, especially with the pitch at this venue expected to be full of runs.

New Zealand

Two successive losses have thrown New Zealand’s plans into disarray, after starting the tournament with a bang. Still, they are almost through to the semis, barring a quirky set of permutations.

One worry for the Kiwis would be the over-dependence on Kane Williamson. The lack of runs around him puts more pressure on the Kiwi captain. Bowling, however, is a pleasant surprise. Lockie Ferguson’s pace has fetched him wickets in buckets, and has given the freedom for the other bowlers to build their campaign around him.

Match Up

Not quite a virtual quarter-final, but this one is the closest we can have! England can’t depend on the results of other matches and need to pick up full points here. New Zealand will be in no great hurry, although consecutive losses have sown seeds of worry in the camp. If the pitch behaves the same way as it did in the Sri Lanka vs West Indies match, then it will be advantage England batsmen.

History & Statistics

  • England have won 20 of their last 24 home ODIs.
  • England have won six of their last nine WC ODIs.
  • Seven of England’s last eight WC ODIs were won by the team batting first.
  • England have won six of their last seven ODIs at this venue.
  • New Zealand have lost six of the last eight H2Hs.
  • New Zealand have won the last five WC H2Hs, with their last loss coming in 1983.
  • New Zealand have won 13 of their last 16 WC ODIs.

Key Players

Roy’s addition to the England side has reinvigorated them. There is a distinct flair and flamboyance that the opener adds to the hosts.

Having lost his stupendous form at the inopportune time, Ross Taylor will be looking to get back among the runs. Should he do that, the Kiwis will be in with a chance.
