England v Sri Lanka 3rd Test Tips, Predictions and Match Preview - England chase historic clean sweep

England captain Joe Root sweeps a ball

England continued their supremacy by posting a 57 run win over Sri Lanka in the second Test in Pallekele to win the series 2-0 with one match to go.

Joe Root has witnessed his first away series win as a captain and will now look to cap it off with a first-ever 3-0 win in Asia.

The SSC Stadium in Colombo will witness the third and final Test from Friday, as England look to take advantage of the continuing struggles of the host team.

Sri Lanka Match Preview

Sri Lankan batsman struggled once again, as opener Dimuth Karunaratne (63 & 57) showed his gritty game and middle-order batsman Roshen Silva (85 & 37) brought his technical game to the fore. That, however, was not enough for Sri Lanka to mount a comeback win.

The failure of the rest of the batsmen and the struggles of the bowlers showed that Sri Lanka are a long way away from picking up a win. Right-arm mystery off-spinner Akila Dananjaya is out of this Test due to allegations over his bowling action, further weakening the hosts.

England Match Preview

England have been authoritative and dominant in all departments, with Joe Root’s second innings 124 leading the way. There were contributions all over the board for the visitors and that helped them in edging the Lankans out.

The spin trio – left-arm orthodox spinner Jack Leach, right-arm off-spinner Moeen Ali and leg-spinner Adil Rashid – combined to take 19 wickets in Pallekele and even out-performed their Sri Lankan counterparts. Root’s side is brimming with confidence and will be gunning for a series whitewash.

Match Up

Sri Lanka will be further weakened by the absence of spinner Akila Dananjaya, who had eight wickets in Pallekele. It is, however, their faltering batsmen putting Sri Lanka’s chances at a risk and making it a tough proposition to even think of a win.

England are enjoying some of their best away cricket at the moment, with their batsmen showing courage and bowlers performing with consistency. With almost every player chipping in, it will be difficult for the Lankans to trip the visitors.

Key Players

Roshen Silva showed excellent technique in Pallekele to prove his worth in the Sri Lankan middle-order. His gritty innings could have earned more, had he received better support from the top-order. With nothing but pride to play for, Sri Lanka will be desperate to see the in-form batsman to keep up his scores.

Having started the tour with question marks over his place as an opener, Keaton Jennings showed his worth. Gritty knocks in the first Test were followed with some excellent displays in the field making sure that he earns his place for sometime in the near future. Can he underline it with another gritty knock?
