Hobart Hurricanes v Adelaide Strikers BBL Tips, Predictions and Preview - Canes to gain final revenge

Caleb Jewell of the Hobart Hurricanes

The Hobart Hurricanes are on a roll in the Big Bash League - not only are they winning matches, they are winning them comprehensively.

Having just booked their spot in the final four, they will look to continue their winning run when they meet defending champions Adelaide Strikers at Aurora Stadium in Launceston on Thursday.

This is a rematch of BBL07 final, but the Strikers are in grave danger of missing out on the playoff positions this season. Will the sight of last season beaten finalists bring the best out of the champions?

Hobart Hurricanes

The Hurricanes recovered from their loss to the Renegades by posting a comprehensive nine-wicket win over the Heat on Tuesday. The duo of D’Arcy Short (541 runs, SR 141.25) and Matthew Wade (399 runs, SR 139.51) remain run-thirsty, which is bad news for the Strikers.

Johan Botha’s sudden retirement has challenged the side, but the bowling led by James Faulkner (18 wickets, ER 7.75) has stepped up. Even Jofra Archer (13 wickets, ER 7.76), who struggled for consistency has come up good in the last match making the Canes an all-round attack.

Adelaide Strikers

The Strikers have lost their last four matches and have lost all the early season momentum. With a net run rate that is nearly the worst of all sides, the Strikers have a lot to cover before they can even dream of a last-minute playoff surge.

Stand-in captain Colin Ingram (301 runs, SR 141.98) remains their only batsman in the top-15 scorers of the season, although the improved form of Jonathan Wells (241 runs, SR 118.71) is a positive sign. With the ball, it is just Rashid Khan (14 wickets, ER 6.0), who is showing some spirit.

Match Up

The Hurricanes have dominated every opponent in every game this season and remain the best side of the tournament. They will now look to guarantee a home final and that could be bad news for the Strikers. Even otherwise, the form of the Strikers is so poor that the final of BBL07 looks like a speck in the distant past.

Key Battles

What can stop Short? He has 541 runs at a SR of 141.25 in 11 innings, with six 50s and five ‘player of the match’ awards. And, he also has six wickets to his credit too.

Can Weatherald improve his BBL08 poor form and recreate the magic of BBL07 final? He had a match-winning 115 from that game.

History & Statistics

  • Home side has won seven of the last eight H2H matches between these sides.
  • Hurricanes have never won two games in a row against the Strikers.
  • Strikers have won six of the last ten matches against the Hurricanes, losing three.
  • Strikers have won four of the five H2H matches they won the toss.

Prediction

The Hurricanes are on top of their game and are ticking every box before the final rounds begin. It is tough to see how Short and co. can be stopped in their tracks by the struggling Strikers.
