Hobart Hurricanes v Melbourne Renegades BBL Tips, Predictions and Preview - Renegades to upset the Canes

Sam Harper of the Renegades bats against the Hurricanes

When Hobart Hurricanes and Melbourne Renegades meet in Hobart this Thursday, it will be a game of two sides who have already qualified for the Big Bash League finals.

The Hurricanes (W9, L3) can guarantee home finals with a win, although they are more or less sure of that. The Renegades (W8, L5), on the other hand, have booked their spot in the final four and can confirm their top-two spot with a win.

Hobart Hurricanes

The Hurricanes have been the dominant team of the season, although two losses in their last three matches indicate that they are in beatable. With Matthew Wade (487 runs, SR 143.23) and D’Arcy Short (567 runs, SR 141.04) taking turns to score in tons, the Hurricanes are at the top of their game.

Even their bowling is on the dot, with James Faulkner (18 wickets) leading them. The only thing that could be of concern is, if they could have peaked too early or have lost steam at the business end of the season.

Melbourne Renegades

The Renegades booked their finals’ spot with three consecutive wins. In fact, they have won six of their last eight, and look to have gained momentum at the right end of the tournament.

Their batting has been an interesting mix this season. While there hasn’t been any one aggregating above 300, three of them led by Simon Harper (279 runs, SR 134.13) have been scoring runs at the right time. With the ball, it is the impressive Kane Richardson (22 wickets) leading the charge in tow with Cameron Boyce (12 wickets).

Match Up

It will be a test of Hurricanes’ batting against the bowling might of the Renegades. While Wade and Short will look to pile more runs, Richardson and Boyce will look to make it tough for them.

Interestingly, the Renegades were the first to defeat the Hurricanes this season when they won by six wickets at Marvel Stadium. Richardson and Aaron Finch starred for the winners.

Key Battles

In a season of highs, Short came up short against the Renegades in their earlier fixture. He will look to make up for that shortfall with a big score here.
It won’t be straightforward for him up against the bowling might of Richardson, who has been picking up wickets for fun.

History & Statistics

  • The visiting side has won five of the last six matches between these sides.
  • Hurricanes have lost four of the five matches at this venue.
  • Both the Hurricanes’ wins have come in the month of January.
  • Renegades have won six of the last seven matches against the Hurricanes.
  • Renegades have won all four matches they batted first against the Hurricanes.

Prediction

Both sides are not short of motivation ahead of this game. While the Hurricanes would look to get back to winning ways, the Renegades will be looking to maintain their winning momentum. It’s not easy to pick a winner here, although the Renegades might have the slight edge because of their recent record.
