India v Australia 3rd ODI Tips, Predictions and Preview - India can seal series

India and Australia

India continued their dominance of the Australian attack by overcoming the visitors in a tight eight-run win in the second ODI and the teams now move to Ranchi for the third ODI on Friday, where the hosts look to seal a series winning lead.

Both sides are still in the World Cup mood as they search for the right combinations before the squad announcements.

India

A clinical 40th ODI century from captain Virat Kohli was the highlight of the Indian innings of 250 on a sluggish pitch. Vijay Shankar (46 off 41 balls) played a sublime knock, although the lower order failed to take advantage.

After conceding an 83-run opening partnership, India came back strongly on the back of some excellent spin bowling in the middle overs. Kohli’s use of his spinners was top-class, while Shankar (2/15) came back to bowl a nerveless final over.

Australia

Pat Cummins (4/29) enjoyed the responsibility of opening the bowling, after Jason Behrendorff was rested. Adam Zampa (2/62) struggled to show the same level of control he exhibited in the first ODI. However, a target of 251 was always within their reach.

Openers Aaron Finch (37) and Usman Khawaja (38) gave a rousing start, but the middle-order struggled to hold its own in the wake of tight spin bowling. Marcus Stoinis (52) took the game to the final over, but came just short of his calculations, leaving Australia wondering about their mounting ODI losses.

Match Up

India have ticked many boxes in their World Cup combinations, although the form of their openers is a worry. KL Rahul remains a choice, while Yuzvendra Chahal’s presence in the squad and Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s return gives them a lot of options.

Australia have a lot to ponder on the inability of their middle-order to control the middle overs. Having played 89 dot balls out of 168 bowled by the Indian spinners in Nagpur, Australia will look to improve their batting.

History & Statistics

India have won eight of their last nine home ODIs against Australia (W8, L1).
India have lost only one of the three completed ODIs at this venue, but that was in their recent match.
India’s Virat Kohli has seven 100s in 33 ODIs against Australia, only behind Sachin Tendulkar’s nine from 71 ODIs.
Australia have lost their last eight ODIs away from home.
Australia have lost 19 of their last 20 ODIs away from home (W1, L19).

Key Players

Shankar displayed excellent all-round skills to gain traction to his World Cup chances. With Hardik Pandya still out of the squad, he will get another chance to forward his claim.

Usman Khawaja has five 30+ scores in his last six ODIs, but his top-score during this run is just 59. Unless he kicks on to post a big score, his World Cup chances hang in the balance.

Prediction

India will look to continue their winning record against Australia, as they look well-balanced for the conditions. Australia came close enough in Nagpur and will look to go over the line in Ranchi, but may not be able to get a win right away.
