India v Bangladesh 1st T20 Tips, Predictions and Preview - Sharma to lead India to victory

A lot of off-field activities dominated the India vs Bangladesh T20I series even before it started - the ban on Shakib Al Hasan leaving the visitors light on experience and expertise.

Regardless, the first of the three matches in Delhi on Sunday is bound to be an exciting match.

India are fresh off the South Africa series, where they drew 1-1 in the T20Is. Bangladesh were last seen in a tri-series at home with Afghanistan and Zimbabwe, sharing the title with Afghanistan.

India

Virat Kohli is given a break, which means it will be Rohit Sharma at the helm. India have a great record under his captaincy, winning 12 of 15 T20Is under him. Furthermore, there is still a lot of T20 pedigree and firepower in the Indian squad.

The hosts will be looking to fix their troubled middle-order, in addition to finding out their back-up bowlers. Yuzvendra Chahal gets a chance to impress and win his place back. All in all, the Indian outfit bears a settled outlook and should fancy their chances.

Bangladesh

The lead up to the series has not been ideal for Bangladesh. The player strike followed by Tamim Iqbal’s pull-out and culminating in Shakib Al Hasan’s ban meant the visitors are already on the back foot. However, there is still a lot of experience for Bangladesh who are now led by Mahmudullah.

The presence of Mushfiqur Rahim and Mustafizur Rahman lends a lot of weight to the Tigers. Although they have never beaten India on foreign soil in T20Is, a chance to impress and push their neighbours is one for the records.

Match Up

India will look to tick some of their problematic areas – the middle-order batsmen and wicket-keeping slot prime among them. The presence of both Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson gives interesting options, while Manish Pandey should fancy his chances of slotting in the middle-order. Bangladesh have a lot to work out in terms of their ideal line-up, considering this format has never been their forte. It is the hosts who start as favourites, although predicting in T20Is is fraught with risk.

History & Statistics

  • India have won four of their last five completed T20Is.
  • India have won 12 out of 15 T20Is under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy, but lost two of the last three.
  • Bangladesh have lost all five T20Is against India away from home (including neutral venues).
  • Bangladesh have lost five of their last seven T20Is away from home, including neutral venues.

Key Players

Krunal Pandya has slowly made the spin all-rounder slot in the Indian T20 side his own. Unassuming with the ball, useful with the bat and enterprising in the field – Krunal presents a complete package that is best suited to the format.

Mushfiqur Rahim has nightmare memories of his previous outing in India against India. The 2016 T20I World Cup saw Rahim celebrate prematurely only to see his team choke and lose by a solitary run. He will be itching to make up for that goof-up.
