Rohit Sharma celebrated becoming the first Indian male cricketer to play 100 T20Is with a masterclass to lead India to an eight-wicket win in Rajkot and level the series at 1-1 going into the finale at Nagpur on Sunday.

It is tricky to tell which side has the momentum. Bangladesh took their chances in Delhi and romped home with ease. India were poor in the field once again in Rajkot, but their batsmen saved the day.

The hosts have shown their weakness when batting first – India have lost four of their last five T20Is batting first, while winning 14 of their last 17 completed chases in T20Is. Bangladesh have the right skill set to stretch and win the match, but it remains to be seen if they can take their chances again.

India

The hosts were poor in the field once again, led by Rishabh Pant. A shocking error with a stumping aside, there have been numerous silly overthrows gifting Bangladesh the initiative. Thankfully for India, Yuzvendra Chahal (2 for 28) helped regain control and limited Bangladesh to a below-par score.

Then it was all Rohit Sharma show with the bat (85 off 43 balls, 6x4 6x6) leading India over the line with more than four overs to spare. India will once again look to their key players to lead from the front.

Bangladesh

Bangladesh batsmen struggled to post big scores in Rajkot. Four batsmen got into double figures, but couldn’t go past 36. Mohammad Naim (36 off 31) and Liton Das (29 off 21) couldn’t cash in on the chances that came their way. A late cameo from Mahmudullah (30 off 21) was still not enough to lift them to a good score.

It was worse with the ball, as none of the Bangladeshi bowlers were able to exert control. Only leg-spinner Aminul Islam (2 for 28) got among the wickets. For the visitors to have any chance of a series win, the senior pros need to step up with both bat and ball.

Match Up

India showed their superiority with an authoritative display in the second T20I in Rajkot. Bangladesh still have the spark to stretch the hosts, but are dependent on specific individuals leading their charge. If the middle-order stands up and gets among the runs, Bangladesh can think of pushing for a win. Toss could be crucial, considering India’s penchant for chases. Bangladesh’s chances lie in putting India first and then limit them to a par score.

History & Statistics

  • India have won five of their last seven completed T20Is.
  • India have won 14 of their last 17 completed chases in T20Is.
  • Bangladesh have lost six of their seven T20Is against India away from home (including neutral venues).
  • Bangladesh have won three of their last four T20Is while batting first.

Key Players

Deepak Chahar has been the silent contributor for India – often picking up wickets with the new ball. More recently, he has developed the art of bowling at the death. Once again, the soft-spoken seamer could be vital for India’s chances.

Aminul Islam has been the only bright spark for Bangladesh this series with his consistent bowling. He can once again be the differentiator for the visitors.
