India v New Zealand Cricket World Cup Tips, Predictions and Preview - Unbeaten sides clash

Virat Kohli

Match #18 of the ICC World Cup 2019 will feature two of the biggest contenders - at least on form - when the only unbeaten sides India and New Zealand will play in Nottingham on Thursday.

India have been impressive in their wins over South Africa (six wickets) and Australia (36 runs), but were dealt a body blow with the injury to opener Shikhar Dhawan. Table toppers New Zealand have been even more impressive in their comprehensive wins over Sri Lanka (ten wickets), Bangladesh (two wickets) and Afghanistan (seven wickets).

India

Opener Rohit Sharma (179 runs, SR 83.64) has been the rock of strength for India, who have also seen captain Virat Kohli pick some useful runs against Australia (82). It remains to be seen if KL Rahul’s elevation as an opener will have the same impact as Dhawan.

Jasprit Bumrah (five wickets, ER 4.80) is leading India’s bowling with the verve that has made him ODI’s top-ranked bowler in the world. Equally impressive has been the leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal (six wickets, ER 5.65).

New Zealand

The Kiwis have been the silent trend setters this tournament. The bowlers have all enjoyed great spells of bowling, led by their speedsters Lockie Ferguson (eight wickets, ER 3.88) and Matt Henry (seven wickets, ER 5.17). The duo will once again be crucial to the Kiwi cause.

With the bat, they were tested only by the Bangladeshis and the Kiwis almost had a mighty scare in that match. Ross Taylor (130 runs, SR 90.90) continues to score runs freely, while Kane Williamson (119 runs) has been slow and steady.

Match Up

New Zealand have happy memories of playing India in the World Cups in England, as they remain unbeaten in three. Even the practice match prior to this edition went into their kitty. However, this time around it will be a bigger test, as India will look to put their game face.

The loss of Dhawan, however, accentuates India’s troubles – not to speak of the inclement weather. The overcast conditions make it a ‘bowl first’ match and gives a slight edge to the Kiwis, who have a better pace attack.

History & Statistics

  • Since the 2011 World Cup, India have lost only twice in the tournament (W16, L2, T1).
  • India have won their last two ODIs in England, but have never won three in a row in this country since 2014.
  • New Zealand have won all three World Cup encounters against India played in England.
  • New Zealand have lost six of the last seven matches against India.
  • Both the sides have been alternating ODI wins in neutral venues for the last seven games, with New Zealand winning the previous match.

Key Players

Hardik Pandya (SR 185.29, ER 6.18) has bowled better than the stats suggest and batted as good as the numbers indicate. The Indian captain will hope that his all-rounder can keep the bat swinging merrily.

Trent Boult (three wickets, ER 4.20) has had a meddling tournament so far, littered with many instances of bad luck. With happy memories of playing India, against whom he has 12 wickets in his last four matches, Boult will look to make it count.
