India v South Africa 3rd T20 Tips, Predictions and Preview - Can India seal series win?

A clinical India led by their effervescent captain Virat Kohli sprinted to a seven-wicket win against South Africa in the second T20I and the series now winds down in Bengaluru on Sunday.

India will be chasing a series win with South Africa looking to even it up 1-1 with the first T20 a washout.

With a settled squad and an experienced captain at the helm, India look much more suited to the conditions. South Africa looked sprightly to begin with, but fizzled out at the business end of things in Mohali. Unless they improve dramatically, India look set for another win.

India

Kohli scored a record-breaking 22nd T20I fifty (72* off 52 balls) to become the format’s leading run-scorer. Although Rohit Sharma is just seven runs behind, the Indian captain’s fine form augurs well for the hosts. Bowlers utilised the conditions well to make it a fairly easy win.

India will have concerns about the poor execution skills of Rishabh Pant, while everyone else seem to have nailed their position. The superior batting skills of the Indian unit make them a good bet to close the match. Regardless, India have an even record at this venue (W2, L2) and will be keen to correct that.

South Africa

Quinton de Kock (52 off 37) played a captain’s knock on his debut at the helm to lead the Proteas to a sparkling start. However, poor T20 skills in the middle overs meant they finished with a below par score. Question marks over the hitting skills of their middle order is a concern for South Africa.

Kagiso Rabada was expected to be more incisive than a spell of 3-0-24-0, although de Kock’s use of his premier bowler left much to be desired. Andile Phehlukwayo and the other all-rounders didn’t look threatening, making South Africa look a bit low on their resources.

Match Up

India were clinical in Mohali, earning a much-deserved victory with ease. With superior skilled team at his disposal, Kohli looks much more relaxed in the field than his counterpart. South Africa will have to improve their batting to give a good fight. They have the right team to make a fist, but executing their skills in the middle overs will be a challenge. It could once again come down to being consistent over 40 overs, which for the moment, India are favourites.

History & Statistics

  • India have won their last four completed T20Is, their best such run since June 2018.
  • Nine of India’s last 11 T20I wins have come while bowling first.
  • India have now won eight last ten T20Is at home.
  • South Africa have lost only two of their last ten completed T20Is (W7, T1, L2).
  • However, South Africa have lost four of their last six completed T20Is away from home (W2, L4).

Key Players

Hardik Pandya slotted back into the Indian side with a useful spell of 4-0-31-1. His batting still remains under-utilised, and could fancy his chances of a hit out in the middle.

Dwaine Pretorius had a good hit in the top-order when promoted against Sri Lanka in his previous match. With the top-three barring de Kock struggling for South Africa, the all-rounder could be set for a promotion.
