A rampant India overpowered South Africa in all departments for a comprehensive innings-and-137-runs win in the second Test in Pune to take 2-0 lead and seal the series.

However, with an unprecedented first-ever series whitewash against South Africa in view, India will not be taking this match lightly.

Then there is the little matter of 40 points in the ICC Test Championship race as the teams move to Ranchi for the third and final Test from Saturday, October 19.

A sublime double century from Virat Kohli, his seventh overall, was enough for the Indians to push South Africa all the way. The series has been such that three of India’s top-four – Mayank Agarwal, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have all aggregated 300+ runs with five 100s between them.

Bowling has been equally sharp, with Ravichandran Ashwin (14 wickets) and Ravindra Jadeja (ten wickets) leading the show. Not just the spinners, even the Indian pacers led by Mohammed Shami (eight wickets) outnumbered their South African counterparts in the series.

South Africa

It has been a damning series for the Proteas, who could never come to terms with the challenge. Dean Elgar (216 runs) has been their best batsman, while the inconsistent returns of senior pros Quinton de Kock (Avg. 36.75) and Faf du Plessis (Avg. 34.25) have hurt the team.

Bowling lacked bite, with no bowler taking more than six wickets. That was achieved by Keshav Maharaj, who misses out this Test with an injury. With long-term planning in mind, the South Africans could be forced to tinker with their line-up and hand chances for the bench warmers. Their quest to salvage pride could make for an interesting reading.

Match Up

India will be buoyant that the series in the bag, but as Kohli proclaimed there won’t be any let down in intensity. Umesh Yadav’s brilliance in the Pune Test notwithstanding, he might be pushed out of the final XI if India look to go with a change of bowling line-up. South Africa, on the other hand, could recall Zubayr Hamza, Lungi Ngidi and Henrich Klaasen in their bid to avoid a whitewash. Regardless of the changes, it is India who are in the driver’s seat to complete a 3-0 series win.

History & Statistics

  • India have won eight of their last ten Tests, losing just once.
  • The team batting first went on to win 11 of the last 12 Tests involving India.
  • That was the case in the last eight Tests between India and South Africa.
  • South Africa are winless in 11 Tests in the Indian sub-continent, losing the last six and seven overall.
  • South Africa have lost only two Tests by an innings margin this decade, both coming against India.

Key Players

Ravindra Jadeja had a whirlwind fifty and a nine-wicket match haul in the only Test played at this venue. Having shown his batting prowess in Pune, he could be looking to extend his skill set and further showcase his abilities.

Captaincy aside, Faf du Plessis will be disappointed with how his batting transpired in the series (137 runs, Avg. 34.25, 2x50). He will be eyeing that elusive big knock to ease his side’s worries.
