Melbourne Renegades v Melbourne Stars BBL Final Tips, Predictions and Preview - Who will be BBL08 champions?

After nearly two months of action and 58 games, we will find out the winner of BBL08 when the Renegades and Stars clash in a Melbourne derby at Marvel Stadium on Sunday.

Whichever of the Melbourne rivals wins the Big Bash League final, we will witness a new BBL champion. Who will lift the title for the first time?

Road to the final

The Renegades ended the league season second in the points tally (W8, L6) behind Hobart Hurricanes. A better run rate gave them a home semi-final and the Renegades made the best use of that. Riding on the performances of Cameron Boyce (2/33), Aaron Finch (44) and Daniel Christian (31* off 14), the Renegades booked their first-ever BBL final appearance with a three-wicket win over the Sydney Sixers.

Only a last league match win helped the Stars qualify for the semi-final (W7, L7). They then stunned the favourites Hobart Hurricanes at the Bellerive Oval by six wickets. Daniel Worrall (4/23) and Glenn Maxwell (43*) were the architects of the Stars’ passage to the final.

Top performers

Batting hasn’t really been the Renegades’ top suit this season and only Sam Harper (335 runs, SR 141.35) aggregating more than 300. Aaron Finch (207 runs, SR 116.94) adds experience to the squad. Kane Richardson (24 wickets) has been sensational throughout BBL08, while Cameron Boyce (14 wickets, ER 6.37) has proven difficult to hit.

Marcus Stoinis (494 runs, 14 wickets) has been the cornerstone of the Stars’ success this season. Glenn Maxwell (330 runs, SR 145.37) got vital runs as the series progressed, which is good news for the Stars. Bowling hasn’t been sensational, but the control of Sandeep Lamichhane (11 wickets, ER 6.97) and Adam Zampa (12 wickets, ER 7.04) gives them an edge.

Head to Head this season

The Stars did a league double this season over the Renegades, winning by seven wickets at the MCG and by six wickets at Marvel Stadium.

Stoinis (2/26 & 78*) led the winning charge at the MCG and at Marvel (3/19 & 70*) scooping man of the match awards in both the games.

History & Statistics

  • Renegades have won only one of the seven H2H matches played at the Docklands, with their only win coming in December 2012.
  • Renegades have won four of their six matches at this venue in BBL08.
  • Stars have a 11-4 winning record over the Renegades, winning the last three.
  • Stars have won six of the seven H2H matches that Renegades won the toss.

Prediction

The Renegades are in their first BBL final, while the Stars are only in their second final. It is unchartered territory for both the sides, who are in good form coming into this game. The Renegades have won four of their last five, while the Stars have won five of their last seven.

It could boil down to how well the Australian national team players perform for their respective sides – Stoinis, Maxwell and Finch. However, keep an eye out for the young guns Harper and Lamicchane.

Tips

Back the Stars to score the most sixes @ $2.50 (TopBetta).

Back Harper to score at least one six @ $2.37 (Ladbrokes).

Back Lamichhane to be the top Stars’ bowler @ $4.00 (BetEasy).
