Melbourne Renegades v Sydney Sixers Semi-Final BBL Tips, Predictions and Preview - Renegades to edge into final

Kane Richardson of the Renegades

Melbourne Renegades will host Sydney Sixers in the second semi-final of the Big Bash League at Marvel Stadium on Friday.

For a long portion of the Sixers’ last group game against the Melbourne Stars, this second semi-final of BBL08 was seemingly likely to be hosted by Sydney. But a spectacular Sixers collapse handed the hosting rights to Melbourne.

Melbourne Renegades

Eight wins out of 14 marked the Renegades’ regular season this BBL. They may have lost their last match to the Hurricanes, but three wins in four is a good return coming into the finals.

The Renegades batting has been a curious mix – no individual brilliance, but just enough collective strength to land them a second spot. Sam Harper (299 runs) remains their best batsman, but the return of Aaron Finch and Marcus Harris makes them stronger.

With the ball, Kane Richardson (24 wickets) has been an absolute treat, but the loss of all-rounder Mohammad Nabi throws question marks over the middle-order.

Sydney Sixers

It has been a season of misses for the Sixers, who finished level on points with the Renegades but with an inferior net run rate. Four wins out of their last five is a good return, but that loss was a damning one for the confidence.

Daniel Hughes (347 runs) has been the pillar of their batting, while there are four players aggregating over 200. More importantly, the form of James Vince (241 runs) is a welcome boost.

It is the Sixers’ bowling that takes the cake, though. Sean Abbott (21 wickets), Tom Curran (20) and Sean O’Keefe (19) all feature in the top-five bowlers of BBL08.

Match Up

It will be a test of the Renegades batting against the Sixers’ bowling. Even bigger concern is the loss in confidence for the Sixers after that heavy loss in the final league game. How they respond to that bashing will determine the chances of the Sixers.

Key Battles

It will be the battle of the top-two bowlers as Richardson from the Renegades clashes with Abbott of the Sixers. While all eyes will be on how the batting units fare, these two pacers could continue their wicket-taking ways in this battle royale.

History & Statistics

  • The average powerplay score at this venue is 36.4, the least among all venues in BBL08.
  • Renegades have lost three of the four fixtures at this venue, with their only win coming in January 2012.
  • Renegades have lost 14 of the 23 BBL home encounters they started as favourites.
  • Sixers have won four of the last six H2H matches.
  • Sixers have won three of the four matches they bowled first.
  • Only Perth Scorchers average fewer powerplay runs than the Sixers in BBL08.

Prediction

Can the Sixers forget their last match drubbing as a one-off? The result of this semi-final lies so much on how they can bounce back from that drubbing. Both sides lose key players – Nabi and Curran – for national duties, evening out the contest. This could be a low-scorer that may just tilt in favour of the hosts.

Tips

Back the Renegades to score the highest in first 6 overs @ $1.91 (Ladbrokes).

Back Harper to hit at least six @ $3.00 (Ladbrokes).

Back Richardson to be Renegades top bowler @ $3.40 (Sportsbet).
