Melbourne Renegades v Sydney Thunder BBL Tips, Predictions and Preview - Thunder to upset Renegades

Callum Ferguson

It is tight at the top of the Big Bash League standings as we move closer to the final round but Melbourne Renegades will have a great chance to improve their playoff chances when they host Sydney Thunder at Marvel Stadium on Wednesday.

The Renegades (W7, L5) picked up their third win in four matches when they demolished Perth Scorchers on Monday. The Thunder (W5, L5, NR1) on the other hand, have lost just once in their last four matches (W2, L1, NR1) and have a game in hand on their hosts.

Melbourne Renegades

The Renegades’ win over the Scorchers was due to a superior bowling performance, which has been the story of their season. Kane Richardson (19 wickets, ER 7.10) and Cameron Boyce (ten wickets, ER 6.23) continue to be excellent with the ball.

Batting has seen just two individual fifties for the Renegades, but the return of Aaron Finch and the aggression of Sam Harper (269 runs, SR 135.17) remain the positive points with the bat. Also topping the charts is the all-rounder Daniel Christian (166 runs, 11 wickets).

Sydney Thunder

The Thunder haven’t played a game since January 24, but the surge in performances of Shane Watson (297 runs, SR 130.26) and Callum Ferguson (341 runs, SR 147.61) is a great boost to their playoff hopes. However, with none of the other batsmen struggling to pick up runs consistently, the Thunder could be hard-pressed in their run-in to the playoffs.

With the ball, it is the all-rounder Daniel Sams (14 wickets) who continues to lead the charts while Gurinder Sandhu (eight wickets, ER 7.38) has stitched together consistent performances.

Match Up

Batting remains a worry for the Renegades, but their already-strong bowling is boosted by the addition of Chris Tremain. That gives them a narrow edge over the Thunder.

The Thunder have been over-dependent on Watson and Ferguson for their runs, which could be a huge factor when pitted against the strong Renegades’ bowling.

Key Battles

With his fearless striking at the top of the order, Harper has been the success story of the season for the Renegades. His consistency could once again be crucial.

After a string of low scores, Ferguson stormed to life in BBL08 with scores of 52 and 113* in his last two matches. Another good score wouldn’t go amiss.

History & Statistics

  • Renegades have won seven of the eight matches against Thunder.
  • Renegades have lost seven of their last ten home matches.
  • Away team has won six of the eight matches between these sides.
  • The only win for Thunder over Renegades was picked up at this venue.
  • Thunder average 49 in powerplay overs in BBL08, compared to 44 of Renegades.

Prediction

The last time these sides played this season, the Renegades won by 12 runs. Ferguson gave the Thunder a chance, but their slow batting stopped their chase in the tracks. The Renegades are in better shape than the Thunder but with both sides having question marks over their batting, this is one fixture that could defy odds.

Tips

Back the Thunder to win @ $2.05 (BetEasy).

Back the Thunder to score the highest first 6 overs @ $2.00 (Unibet).

Back Harper to score at least a six @ $2.62 (Ladbrokes).
