Melbourne Stars v Perth Scorchers BBL Tips, Predictions and Preview - Scorchers in need of a win

Perth Scorchers and the Melbourne Stars

Perth Scorchers find themselves in an early season must-win battle as they travel to the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) to take on the Melbourne Stars in BBL on Wednesday.

The Stars (W3, L2) have won three games in a row and are looking like a team ready to move up the table. The Scorchers (W1, L5) on the other hand have lost their last three and are searching for inspiration to turn their season around.

Melbourne Stars

The Stars have enjoyed the all-round returns of Marcus Stoinis (146 runs @ SR 150.51, four wickets), who has impressed since promoted to the top. Peter Handscomb could be available for the game, which further increases their strength. Nic Maddinson’s anticipated return from injury is another boost.

Bowling superstar Sandeep Lamichhane (eight wickets) will be missed, although Dwayne Bravo (seven wickets) and Scott Boland (five wickets) have stepped up in the recent games.

Perth Scorchers

Unlike the previous season, only Ashton Turner (197 runs, SR 117.26) remains their batting superstar. As everyone else have struggled around Turner, the expected return of Marsh brothers from national duty could be the turnaround they are awaiting.

The fast bowler duo of Nathan Coulter-Nile and Jason Behrendorff have impressed with eight wickets each, although they have enjoyed their home conditions. Only Behrendorff (ER 5.85) and Ashton Agar (ER 6.23) have been impressive with their control, putting pressure on the Scorchers’ performances.

Match Up

The Stars have turned their season around after starting on a wrong footing. Stoinis’ consistency at the top of the order is a boon, while the anticipated return of Handscomb adds more teeth.

For the Scorchers, it is not yet do-or-die stage, but the desperation to pick up a win is vivid. The return of Marsh brothers is likely to solve their top-order worries, although the form of Michael Klinger and the poor form of David Willey is a huge concern.

Key Battles

With his ability to take the game up to the opposition in the power play overs, Stoinis remains a key player for the Stars. With Handscomb and Maddinson set to return, it could see a liberated Stoinis enjoying his stint even more.

Coulter-Nile felt that the ODI snub was a poor reflection on his fitness and form. He has the right platform to answer the selectors and a good performance here could prove to be the right answer.
