New Zealand have seen their unbeaten record in the 2019 ICC World Cup shattered by Pakistan and they are not yet sure of a semis spot as they prepare to face trans-Tasman rivals Australia next.

This game to be played at Lord’s on Saturday isn’t yet a must-win for New Zealand. They just need one win to assure their spot in the semis. Australia, on the other hand, have already booked their spot and will look to continue their winning run.

New Zealand

One bad day at the office ruined New Zealand’s unbeaten record at the tournament. However, deep down, the team must be wondering why the runs have dried up from their openers Martin Guptill and Colin Munro. With Tom Latham also struggling for impact, there are selection issues engulfing the Kiwis for the moment.

Captain Kane Williamson’s form is the best thing to happen, but he would expect his top-order to start pulling their socks. Lockie Ferguson continues to impress, but questions remain over the presence of Matt Henry and the absence of Ish Sodhi.

Australia

Aaron Finch’s men continue to ramp up their performances. Openers Finch and David Warner have scored nearly 50% of Australia’s runs. Their confident starts have overwhelmingly covered for the poor form of the rest. Having said that, Glenn Maxwell and Alex Carey have been showing some good hitting power at the end.

Regardless, Australia will hope that their middle-over struggles do not boil down to another game here. No such problems with the bowling unit, as Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins continue to collect wickets like old stamps. The spinner’s slot will be debated, although Nathan Lyon could get an extended run.

Match Up

One poor result doesn’t cancel out New Zealand’s positives in the tournament. However, the over-dependence on Williamson should end for the Kiwis to have an impact from here on.

Australia have a chance to experiment, but considering their urge to continue the winning moment, they might not. The openers will once again be the cynosure of all eyes, but questions will be asked of their execution in the middle overs.

History & Statistics

  • New Zealand have lost 17 of the 20 H2H ODIs played in neutral venues, winning only one.
  • New Zealand have won the last two H2H ODIs, but have not won three in a row against Australia since February 2007.
  • Australia have won seven of ten World Cup H2H ODIs.
  • Australia have won 14 of their last 15 ODIs.
  • Five of the last seven World Cup matches between these sides have been won by the chasing side.

Key Players

Excellent performances in the field notwithstanding, Guptill is struggling with the bat. He needs to bring his A-game to make sure the pressure on the middle-order is lessened.

Behind the galloping pair of Warner and Finch, Usman Khawaja has been silently accumulating runs for the Aussies. He will be crucial as the tournament goes on and when the openers have a poor day in the middle.
