New Zealand v Bangladesh 1st ODI Tips, Predictions and Preview - Guptill to lead Black Caps charge

Martin Guptill

This is a crucial series for both New Zealand and Bangladesh before the ODI World Cup in England when the first of the three-match ODI series is played at the McLean Park in Napier on Wednesday.

It is a chance for the hosts to bury the ghosts of the Indian series. For the visitors, a challenge in overseas conditions – not too dissimilar to what they get in England – is top of the agenda.

All eyes will be on the team compositions, as both sides grapple with uncertainty.

New Zealand

The Kiwis had a below-par series against India, where they were comprehensively beaten 4-1. New Zealand batsmen couldn’t decipher the spin code of the Indians, failing to lift the side. Kane Williamson (162 runs) had a poor series and so did Martin Guptill (47 runs).

The bowlers fared slightly better, with Trent Boult (12 wickets) storming to life in the last couple of matches. Several players are on their last leg to impress, with Colin Munro sitting out the first two matches.

Bangladesh

The Tigers have not played an ODI since the three-match home series against West Indies in December 2018 and will be without key all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan.

That increases the responsibility on Tamil Iqbal, Mushfiqur Rahim and captain Mashrafe Mortaza – the three senior players in the squad. Interestingly, they lost the only practice match they played against New Zealand Xi. Mahmudullah (72 & 2/37) and Mustafizur Rahman (2/33) being the lone positive factors.

Match Up

New Zealand will look to get their house in order, but the opening combination and the performance of spinners will be watched with intent. The presence of hard-hitting all-rounders gives them an edge in the middle-order.

Bangladesh has a lot of experience to trouble the Kiwis. Tamim’s batting and Mustafizur’s bowling will be crucial for the Bangladesh Tigers to have any hopes of an upset.

History & Statistics

New Zealand have lost four of their last five ODIs, but have won 14 of their last 21 home ODIs.
New Zealand have not produced an opening partnership of 35 runs or more in an ODI for an year.
Bangladesh have won five of their last six ODIs, but have lost five of their last seven away from home.
Bangladesh have won only one of their 32 ODIs played in South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia.

Key Players

Injury stopped Guptill from complete participation in the Indian series, but the opener is not in form ahead of this match. With very little time left before finalising the World Cup squads, Guptill will look to blast at the top.

His counterpart Tamim has shown a great sense of maturity in the last couple of years. His calculated knocks coupled with his ability to clear the field with ease, makes Tamim a dangerous proposition for the Black Caps.

Prediction

Bangladesh may have been able to compete with New Zealand with Shakib in their ranks. Without him, their balance goes for a toss and gives the Black Caps a great chance to start the series with a win.

Tips

Back New Zealand to score the most 6s @ $1.57 (BetEasy).

Back Tamim to score at least one six @ $3.00 (Ladbrokes).

Back Guptill to be the top New Zealand batsman @ $4.25 (Neds).
