New Zealand v Bangladesh 1st Test Tips, Predictions and Preview - Black Caps to continue progress

Henry Nicholls

New Zealand have risen to number two in ICC Test rankings and they can celebrate it with a win against Bangladesh at Seddon Park in Hamilton starting from Thursday.

Having already blanked the Asian visitors in the ODIs, the Black Caps can look forward to another fruitful outing in the first match of a three-match series.

New Zealand

The Kiwis come into this series with six wins in their last seven series, with the loss at home to South Africa in 2017 being their only blip. That run saw them win four series on the trot, including creditable wins against England (at home) and Pakistan (away in UAE).

It is their batting that takes the plaudits, as Tom Latham, Henry Nicholls and Kane Williamson have all enjoyed a productive 2018 season. Bowling as usual revolves around the trio of Trent Boult, Tim Southee and Neil Wagner.

Bangladesh

Even before the series started, Bangladesh have been put on the back foot by the list of injuries to key players. Shakib Al Hasan and Tashkin Ahmed are already out of the series, while Mushfiqur Rahim remains a big question mark. That casts a shadow on what is a rare occasion for Bangladesh cricket – this is only the third time that they are playing a three-match series.

Mominul Haque has had a very successful 2018 year in the Tests with the bat, but it is the experienced Tamim Iqbal and captain Mohmadullah who will be vital.

Match Up

The Black Caps have a settled Test squad, which gives them an edge over the visitors. Williamson and co. will be wary of taking their opponents too lightly, but there is enough width and consistency in the Kiwis’ squad to be confident of continuing their run.

Bangladesh start with a lot of baggage, considering the injury troubles they have. The senior players including Tamim Iqbal and Mahmudullah will have to pull their weight for them to have any chance.

History & Statistics

New Zealand have won six of their last ten Tests, losing just one (W6, D3, L1).
At home in 13 Tests since November 2016, New Zealand have lost just once (W8, D4, L1) and are unbeaten in their last seven Tests (W4, D3).
New Zealand have won four of the last five Tests played at this venue (W4, D1), with their last loss coming way back in 2012.
Bangladesh are yet to avoid defeat in 19 Tests played in South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia.

Key Players

Nicholls had an exciting 2018, scoring 658 runs at an average of 73.11 in just seven matches. With his pristine form, the southpaw would be eager to pile on more runs.

He had a very poor ODI series, but Iqbal remains the best batsman in this Bangladesh unit to take the game to the Kiwis. A good knock from him will help start things on the right note for the Bangla Tigers.

Prediction

Bangladesh start the game on the wrong foot and it will be a big surprise if they defeat New Zealand – even bigger than Sri Lanka’s win over South Africa.

Tips

Back Nicholls to score 50 in 1st innings @ $2.50 (Ladbrokes).

Back Trent Boult to be the top New Zealand bowler @ $3.25 (BetEasy).

Back Mominul Haque to be the best Bangladesh batsman @ $5.00 (Neds).
