New Zealand v Bangladesh 2nd ODI Tips, Predictions and Preview - Black Caps to seal the series

New Zealand's Trent Boult

New Zealand swatted Bangladesh aside by eight wickets to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series and can seal victory at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on Saturday.

It was a comprehensive performance from New Zealand underlined by their superiority in all the three departments. Bangladesh now have to win to stay alive in the series. However, their history and form make it tough to see the Bangla Tigers make an immediate turnaround.

New Zealand

The bowlers led by Trent Boult (3/40) and Mitchell Santner (3/45) kept Bangladesh on the edge all through their innings. The target of 233 was never going to challenge the Black Caps, who rode on Martin Guptill’s unbeaten century (117* off 116 balls) to ease through.

Though they were outclassed by England in their last match, Christchurch is one of the favourite venues for the Kiwis. With Henry Nicholls looking settled in the opening slot, the side will turn their eyes on getting their captain Kane Williamson back to form.

Bangladesh

The inability of their top-order to put noteworthy partnerships pushed Bangladesh to the brink, and they could never recover from that. Mohammad Mithun (62) and Mohammad Saifuddin (41) did try to take the score beyond 250, but the poor start always pegged them back.

Bowlers struggled to have the same impact as their Kiwi counterparts, with the two wickets they took falling to spinners. Senior pros Tamim Iqbal, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mashrafe Mortaza and Mustafizur Rahman were far from being effective in Napier and will be expected to improve.

Match Up

New Zealand answered found solutions to some of the nagging concerns, with Nicholls proving a good pick at the top. Williamson’s lack of runs is a worry, but everything else seems to have clicked at the right time.

Bangladesh struggled for a good start in Napier and their batting will once again be put to test. With very little time between the games and so much at stake, the Bangla Tigers are fighting against time to get their house in order.

History & Statistics

  • New Zealand have won 15 of their last 22 home ODIs.
  • New Zealand have won eight of their nine ODIs at this venue, but the loss came in their most recent match.
  • Bangladesh have lost six of their last eight ODIs away from home.
  • Bangladesh have won only one of their 33 ODIs played in South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia.
  • Bangladesh have lost all 11 ODIs they played in New Zealand.

Key Players

Williamson didn’t score a fifty for five matches now, which is a minor concern in the Black Caps’ camp. With the captain scheduled to take rest after this game, time could be ripe to erase that deficit.

Rahim’s presence in the top-order is a buffer for the visitors, although he didn’t show it in his runs. With his ability to hold an innings together, Rahim could be the spark Bangladesh need.

Prediction

New Zealand look well-balanced to continue their winning run and keep Bangladesh under the mat. The pitch should favour the bowlers initially and also give value for the batsmen playing their shots.

Tips

Back New Zealand to score the highest score in the first 15 overs @ $1.57 (Sportsbet).

Back Williamson to score a 50 @ $2.25 (Ladbrokes).

Back Boult to be top New Zealand bowler @ $3.50 (Neds).
