New Zealand v Bangladesh 3rd ODI Tips, Predictions and Preview - Black Caps to seal series whitewash

Martin Guptill

Two matches and two eight-wicket wins – New Zealand couldn’t have asked for a better re-start to their ODI World Cup preparations after the India series loss.

Of course, Bangladesh didn’t present great resistance, but that shouldn’t take anything away from the Black Caps’ performance.

The series ends with the third ODI in Dunedin – a day affair for a change. Will the change help the Bangla Tigers find their mojo?

New Zealand

Martin Guptill continued his love affair with the Bangladesh attack, making it two centuries on the trot. Knocks of 117* and 118 indicate that the troubles of the India series are behind him now. Captain Kane Williamson takes a break, which means a chance for Colin Munro to stake his claim for the World Cup squad.

Bowlers have been in impressive form too, as Lockie Ferguson (five wickets) continues to rattle with his pace. Tom Latham will look to avenge the loss he suffered as a captain to Bangladesh in Dublin 2017.

Be it the lack of practice or the time to adapt to the New Zealand conditions, none of the senior Bangladesh players were able to impress. Tamim Iqbal (ten runs), Mushfiqur Rahim (29), and Mahmudullah (20) have all struggled.

It’s only thanks to the exploits of Mohammad Mithun (62 & 57) that the Bangla Tigers have been able to post decent scores. Of even bigger concern is the lack of wickets for the bowlers, as the Bangladesh attack could only take four wickets in the series.

Match Up

New Zealand have ticked almost all the boxes and will now look to players like Munro, Latham and James Neesham pick up some batting form. Even with players rested and rotated, the visitors can expect no let-off.

Poor starts and consistent batting collapses have undermined the Bangladesh scores in both the matches so far. All eyes will be on how the experienced duo of Iqbal and Mushfiqur Rahim will step up the plate.

History & Statistics

  • Only Quinton de Kock and Babar Azam have scored three centuries in a three-match ODI series.
  • Six of the seven bilateral ODI series between New Zealand and Bangladesh have seen a whitewash from either side.
  • New Zealand’s last three home series wins have been whitewashes.
  • New Zealand have won all the seven ODIs they played at this venue.
  • Bangladesh have lost all 12 ODIs they played in New Zealand.

Key Players

In a squad that is almost settled for every spot, Munro is fighting one last battle to get his ticket to the World Cup. Making this chance count could add value to his claim.

Scores of 5 & 5 do not speak volumes of Iqbal’s importance to this side. Bangladesh need runs from him at the top to have any hopes of salvaging pride. Staying for more time in the middle is the least he can do.

There is very little value in backing New Zealand’s win, which looks a foregone conclusion. Their strong start is set to continue, to go with their six-hitting. Keep an eye on the individual player markets to get some picks.

Back Guptill to score 50 @ $2.25 (Ladbrokes).

Back Iqbal to be the top Bangladesh batsman @ $3.75 (Neds).
