New Zealand v Bangladesh 3rd Test Tips, Predictions and Preview - Black Caps chase whitewash

New Zealand's Ross Taylor

Even after rain washed out the first two days of action in Wellington, New Zealand found the resolve and strength to dismantle Bangladesh in a little over two days to win the match by an innings and 12 runs.

With the series in the bag, the Black Caps will now look to complete the whitewash when the teams meet in Christchurch for the third Test starting from Saturday.

New Zealand

They batted just two innings this series, but the Kiwi batsmen are already topping the charts. Captain Kane Willamson (274 runs), Ross Taylor (204) and Tom Latham (165) have already shown their thirst for big scores. Question marks over Williamson and BJ Watling’s availability for the third Test doesn’t hamper the side’s supremacy over Bangladesh.

Bowling, as usual, has been dominated by the trio of Neil Wagner (16 wickets), Trent Boult (13) and Tim Southee (seven). The Kiwis have taken all 40 Bangladesh wickets so far and needed just 279 overs to roll the visitors in the series so far.

Bangladesh

The Kiwis ran riot with the Bangla batsmen, but Tamim Iqbal (278 runs) and Mahmudullah (248) had good scores through the series although they weren’t enough. With seniors Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim missing in action, Bangladesh have struggled for consistency.

Nothing’s worse than their bowling this series, with the bowlers taking just 12 wickets while giving away 1, 147 runs in two innings. Young fast bowler Abu Jayed with three wickets remains their most successful bowler, which tells the story of their bowling in the series!

Match Up

New Zealand have called in Tom Blundell to cover Watling in case the ‘keeper doesn’t recover in time. Williamson is more than sure to recover and play the match, which should be bad news for the visitors.

Bangladesh need to improve their bowling by leaps and bounds to have any chance of competing. Middle-order batsmen need to be a bit more responsible and consistent.

History & Statistics

  • New Zealand are unbeaten in their last nine home Tests (W6, D3).
  • New Zealand are unbeaten in 15 home Test matches against sub-continent opposition (W12, D3) since their last loss against Pakistan in 2011.
  • Bangladesh have lost 12 of their 15 Tests against New Zealand, seven of them by an innings.
  • Bangladesh have lost all their 21 away Tests in South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia, with 15 of those losses coming by an innings margin.

Key Players

Jeet Raval hasn’t really been consistent at the top for the Black Caps. Although the alarm bells aren’t ringing yet, the opener would be looking to get a good score under his belt.

Mominul Haque started the series as one of the accomplished batsmen for Bangladesh, only to see his stock take a beating after four failures. Time’s running out for the southpaw to show his skills and worth to the Test side.

Prediction

The Black Caps have had a strangle hold on Bangladesh this series with strong all-round performances. Even if Watling and Williamson do not get fit for the game, there seems to be no way out for the Bangla Tigers.

Tips

Back Taylor to score a 1st innings fifty @ $2.20 (Ladbrokes).

Back Iqbal to be the top Bangladesh batsman in 1st innings @ $4.00 (TopBetta).
