New Zealand v England 1st T20 Tips, Predictions and Preview - Kiwis to win series opener

A new-look England side will start preparing for the T20 World Cup 2020 with a five-match series against New Zealand starting on Friday, November 1st at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch.

The hosts have last played and won 2-1 in England last month. They were led by Tim Southee in Kane Williamson’s absence, which will once again be the case here. As for England, they are playing in T20Is after nearly six months following the Cricket World Cup victory and Ashes loss.

New Zealand

The hosts will welcome pace bowler Lockie Ferguson back after an injury layoff. He had a decent outing against England in the warmups for NZ XI and should be raring to go. Martin Guptill (314 runs) gets a chance to become the sole leader in batting charts of T20I H2Hs with the first run he scores here.

Tim Southee is the top bowler in H2Hs with eight wickets and his experience will be crucial for the Black Caps here. With a number of hard-hitters in his side, including Colin Munro, James Neesham and Colin de Grandhomme, Southee will hope for a positive start with a win.

England

England have packed their side with proven T20 performers from the domestic T20 competition – T20 Blast. They also have a new coach in Chris Silverwood starting his reign. As the two warmups against NZ XI showed, England have the right mix to be a very strong T20 outfit.

Captain Eoin Morgan and Jonny Bairstow will lend experience to the side that has some of the exciting names from the England domestic circuit. Players like Saqib Mahmood, Tom Banton and Matthew Parkinson have proven themselves in the Blast and will be raring to go.

Match Up

The visitors have packed their side full of raw talent from the T20 Blast. They are yet to prove their worth on the international scene. On that front, New Zealand have an edge as their side has been playing together for some time. Southee has been relatively settled in his role as captain and will be confident of continuing his success run from Sri Lanka. Both sides have some excellent hitters in their mix and boundaries should flow.

History & Statistics

  • New Zealand have lost eight of their last 13 T20Is.

Key Players

Martin Guptill averages 34.88 against England with 314 runs from just nine matches. His runs come at a brisk rate of 133.61, which makes him all the more important for this New Zealand side.

In a team with a number of unknowns, captain Eoin Morgan’s role becomes important for England. His recent numbers haven’t been great though, with just one score above 20 in nine T20Is.
