It was a comprehensive win in the end for New Zealand, as they defeated England by an innings and 65 runs at Mount Maunganui and the second Test begins in Hamilton on Friday with the tourists left with much to ponder.

Thankfully for the visitors, the series is not part of the World Test Championship which means they won’t lose out on points.

New Zealand will without Trent Boult, after leaving the field on the fifth day of first Test due to a rib injury and will also be without all-rounder Colin de Grandhomme, but there is enough depth in the squad and quality in the XI to make up for the absences.

New Zealand

The Kiwis are ranked second in the Test rankings and showed just why. They played a patient game to grind England out and take advantage of their weaknesses. BJ Watling (205) and Mitchell Santner (126) epitomised this with the bat, while Neil Wagner’s eight wickets in the match tilted the scales in their favour.

Boult and Colin de Grandhomme are out of this Test, but in Lockie Ferguson and Matt Henry the hosts have enough strength to cover for the absence. The top-order would be looking for runs, especially the openers who haven’t hit the straps in the first Test.

England

It was a chastening experience for the visitors, who let go the first innings initiative and ended up losing the game. A score of 353 wasn’t enough for the first innings and the top-order inconsistencies continued to plague them.

Even England’s bowlers couldn’t press the advantage, after restricting New Zealand to 197 for 5. What should worry the visitors is that they remained in the match for three days, but lost out in the later half of the game.

Match Up

New Zealand didn’t let Kane Williamson’s low score to affect their batting. With consistent performances across the team, New Zealand underlined their superiority. However, the absence of Boult and de Grandhomme levels it up for the second Test. That said, England have a lot to improve themselves if they need to remain competitive.

History & Statistics

  • New Zealand have won five of their last six Tests.
  • New Zealand have won seven of their last nine home Tests, including the last four.
  • Seven of New Zealand’s last ten home wins have come while batting first.
  • New Zealand have won five of their last six Tests at this venue, drawing the other and haven’t lost here since March 2012.
  • England have lost the lone Test played at this venue in 2008.
  • England are winless in their last four Tests against New Zealand (D1, L3).

Key Players

With Boult out of action, Tim Southee becomes even more vital for New Zealand’s cause. He leads the bowling charts at this venue, with 44 wickets in 8 Tests.

Ben Stokes’ dismissal in the first innings of the first Test changed the course of the game. England lost wickets in a heap from then to lose the initiative. Stokes will be a bit more circumspect this time around.
