New Zealand v England 5th ODI Tips, Predictions and Preview - England to seal series

The oscillating series between New Zealand and England continued, as the visitors found a record-breaking Dawid Malan lead them to a massive win at Napier to set up a series decider at Auckland on Sunday.

It has been a strange series in the sense neither team had the momentum nor looked like edging ahead of the other. At various points of the series, both teams looked unbeatable – only to be brought down crashing to earth straight after. Needless to say, the final T20I looks set for an even tussle and an unpredictable one at that.

New Zealand

It was a below par performance in all departments from the Kiwis, as they folded out easily. That they conceded their second-highest total in T20Is was a manifestation of their troubles. The fielding was terrible and the bowling was off-colour through the bowling innings.

Although they teed off quickly, New Zealand were never in the game after the powerplay overs. Beside the openers, captain Tim Southee (39 off 15 balls, 2x4 4x6) chanced his arm but it was too little too late.

England

The visitors were breaking all sorts of records enroute the win at Napier. 241 for 3 was their highest-ever T20I total, 182 runs was the highest partnership for any wicket for England (except the opening wicket) and also as the fastest T20 century from Dawid Malan (103 off 51, 9x4 6x6).

Young leg-spinner Matthew Parkinson (4-0-47-4) had an eventful day, while the visitors toyed with the Kiwis. In the end, the result was as comprehensive as they could have wished for.

Match Up

It has been a strange series so far with neither side willing to zoom ahead of the other. There is no visible momentum for either side and that makes this contest interesting. With the series on the line – although both sides are looking at the larger picture of the World Cup, expect England and New Zealand to put their best foot forward. It is still anybody’s game, but England have played better cricket through the series.
