New Zealand v India 1st ODI Tips, Predictions and Preview - Blacks Caps to win series opener

Ross Taylor of New Zealand

After picking up their maiden bilateral ODI series win against Australia, India continue their ODI World Cup preparation with a white-ball tour to New Zealand.

The first of the five ODIs will be played at McLean Park in Napier on Wednesday.

New Zealand

New Zealand have been the steady performers on the ODI circuit, rising up to third in the rankings. Then have won ten of their last 12 home series, dating back to 2015.

The Kiwis have whitewashed Sri Lanka 3-0 coming into this series. Ross Taylor (281 runs, SR 102.93) was once again consistent with his pickings, while Henry Nicholls (171 runs) and Martin Guptill (153) have also chipped in.

Ish Sodhi (eight wickets, ER 5.16) enjoyed tormenting the Lankans in the middle overs, but will be tested by the Indians. The return of Mitchell Santner and Doug Bracewell will be watched with interest.

India

India have been impressive away from home in the ODIs and have won five of their last six series on the road since 2015/16. During this time, they have lost only five matches in 24 ODIs during this period.

MS Dhoni picked up three fifties in a row (193 runs, SR 73.10) against Australia, while Rohit Sharma (185 runs) and Virat Kohli (153 runs) continued to be among the runs. However, continued reliance on top-order remains a worry for the visitors.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar (eight wickets, ER 4.96) was excellent with the new ball in Australia. The wrist-spin duo of Yuzvendra Chahal (six wickets in one match) and Kuldeep Yadav (two wickets) will be watched with interest.

Match Up

New Zealand have more firepower in their batting, with Munro, Guptill, Taylor and Colin de Grandhomme capable of blasting any attack out of the park.
India are over-reliant on their batting top-order, which leaves their untested middle-order vulnerable. This could be a chance to test their middle-order strength.

History & Statistics

  • New Zealand have won the first match in 11 of the last 12 home ODI series dating back to January 2015.
  • New Zealand have won 13 of their last 16 ODIs at home (W13, L3).
  • New Zealand have not lost to India at home since March 2009 (W5, T1) and have only lost ten of 34 home ODIs overall (W21, L10, T1, NR2).
  • India have won the first match in seven of their last ten ODI series away from home outside Asia.
  • India have lost only five of their last 25 ODIs (W18, L5, T2).
  • India have won 11 of their last 20 ODIs against New Zealand (W11, L8, T1).

Key Players

Taylor has six consecutive 50+ scores leading into this match and in his last 12 ODIs scored ten 50+ scores.

Bhuvneshwar’s use of swing up front with the new ball could be vital for India’s cause, as they chase a good start to the series.

Prediction

The hosts have a slight edge coming into the game, considering their batting firepower that can drill more sixes. India continue to be a lot more top-order reliant, and the swinging ball up front could test their middle and late orders.

Tips

Back New Zealand to win the match @ $2.35 (Neds).

Back Taylor to score a 50 @ $3.00 (Ladbrokes).
