A comprehensive and all-round performance gave India a 4-1 win over New Zealand in the five-match ODI series. As the teams build to the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup, their next assignment is a three-match T20I series.

The first T20I will be played on Wednesday at the Westpac Stadium in Wellington. Both sides welcome new additions to their squad, as the focus still remains the ODI World Cup squad selection.

New Zealand

The Kiwis can take heart from the fact that their best performances came at the end of the ODI series. Ross Taylor (177 runs) and Kane Williamson (162 runs) weren’t at their usual best, although Trent Boult (12 wickets) stormed to life in the last two matches.

New Zealand’s last T20 match was a one-off T20I against Sri Lanka in January that they bossed comfortably. With strong hitters making up the squad, the Kiwis will hope to make the best of the short format to redeem themselves.

India

The visitors enjoyed excellent performances from their bowlers, as Mohammed Shami, Yuzvendra Chahal (nine wickets each) and Kuldeep Yadav (eight wickets) stifled the Kiwis to submission. With the bat, Ambati Rayudu (190 runs) and Shikhar Dhawan (188 runs) led the charts for India.

India are on a roll in T20 cricket, remaining unbeaten in their last nine T20 bilateral series, winning seven and drawing two. With most of the team members remaining the same throughout, India will fancy their chances of continuing that run.

Match Up

New Zealand will bank on the new faces coming in, to give them the lift they desperately need. Their T20 squad is full with strong hitters and that could be their edge over India.

The visitors possess a strong bowling unit, complete with their wrist-spinning duo. It will be interesting to see how they will fare against the strong hitting of the Kiwi side.

History & Statistics

  • New Zealand have lost six of their last seven T20Is.
  • At home, New Zealand have lost five of their last seven T20Is.
  • New Zealand have won five of their last six T20Is at this venue.
  • India have lost six of their eight T20Is against New Zealand.
  • Both the T20Is played between these sides in New Zealand were won by the hosts.

Key Players

He may have failed spectacularly in the ODIs, but this format is Colin Munro’s ow. One of the rare batsmen to enjoy consistent scores in T20Is, Munro will look to keep India under pressure.

Rohit Sharma is the closest that India can get, as an answer to Munro. The stand-in captain enjoys leading from the front – something which the visitors will happily accommodate in this match.

Prediction

T20s are generally not predictable and New Zealand will look to use this to their advantage. The hosts have a strong batting unit at its disposal and that may help them start the T20 series on a high.
