New Zealand v India 2nd T20 BBL Tips, Predictions and Preview - Black Caps chase series win

New Zealand's captain Kane Williamson

New Zealand put aside their ODI troubles and thumped India by 80 runs to inflict their biggest-ever loss in the T20Is and take a 1-0 lead into the second T20I of the three-match series at Eden Park in Auckland on Friday.

With just one day gap between the games, India will be hard pressed as they search for a win to keep the series alive.

New Zealand

The platform for the Kiwis’ win was set up by their batsmen, as Tim Seifert thrashed the Indian bowlers all around for a 43-ball 84 that included six sixes. Even Colin Munro (34 off 20) found some form after a horrific ODI series.

Tim Southee (3/17) proved that concerns over his failing returns are misplaced, while Lockie Ferguson (2/22) and Mitchell Santner (2/24) kept the Indians on a tight leash with pace and spin respectively.

With the Kiwis boasting of strong hitters, they will look to win the series with another win in this match.

India paid the price for going with fewer bowling options and more all-round players. Most of the players picked aren’t even regulars in the format and that showed in the result. Only the spinners Yuzvendra Chahal (1/35) and Krunal Pandya (1/37) were able to stop the onslaught.

Batting too was a case of too many misses, as MS Dhoni (39* off 31) played a typically calm knock. Concerns over the expensive returns of Khaleel Ahmed and low scores for Dinesh Karthik, Rishabh Pant could force them to change the team combination.

Match Up

New Zealand got a lift from the new players coming in, and it was a comprehensive blast in the first T20I that won them the match. There is still scope for improvement, with all-rounders James Neesham and Doug Bracwell waiting for their chance.

India have a lot on their plate after a long tour away from home – including the Australia tour. The team for the first match looked imbalanced and unless they get their combinations right, it is difficult to see them getting back to winning ways.

History & Statistics

  • New Zealand are the only side against whom India have lost more T20Is than wins – the Kiwis have won seven of the nine.
  • The hosts have won all three T20Is they played in New Zealand against India.
  • The last time India lost a T20I series of two matches or more was in August 2016.
  • Rohit Sharma needs two sixes to reach the milestone of 100 sixes in T20I cricket.

Key Players

Seifert has opened for the first time in T20Is and responded brilliantly with a top knock. With an outside chance of a World Cup still lurking around, he will look to impress with one more knock.

Shikhar Dhawan has looked in good touch this series, without really kicking on. Time to get a big one and lead the side from the front.

The short boundaries here provide value for shots and the Kiwi batsmen could be looking to swamp India once again with their big shots. With their proud unbeaten T20I record on the line, however, India will be a tough team to beat.
