New Zealand v India 3rd ODI Tips, Predictions and Preview - India bid to wrap up series

New Zealand and India

India continued their impressive performance with a dominating 90-run win in the second ODI against New Zealand on Saturday and the sides now meet on Monday for the third ODI at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui.

The visitors have been completely dominant in the two matches so far and have a great chance to seal the series. New Zealand have struggled to decipher the spin code and that remains their biggest challenge.

New Zealand

The series has been a struggling one for the host batsmen, so far, with none of them aggregating 100 runs. Kane Williamson and Doug Bracewell remain their only half-centurions so far, while Ross Taylor (46 runs) struggled to replicate his form from the previous series.

Even the bowlers have struggled, as just Lockie Ferguson (three wickets) and Trent Boult (two wickets, ER 5.0) getting among the wickets. Ish Sodhi (0/43) looked economical, but ineffective on Saturday – his lone match of the series so far.

India

Shikhar Dhawan (141 runs), Rohit Sharma (98) and Virat Kohli (88) have all managed to assert their batting supremacy. That meant their fragile middle-order was left untested. However, MS Dhoni had a noteworthy 48* in the second ODI, and is in good form coming into this series.

The story of the season, however, has been their bowling. Spinners Kuldeep Yadav (eight wickets, ER 4.20) and Yuzvendra Chahal (four wickets, ER 4.91) are proving tough for the Kiwi batsmen, while Mohammed Shami (four wickets, ER 5.16) has been equally impressive.

Match Up

With the same pitch set to be used for the second time in three days, it will be another test for the Kiwi batsmen against the Indian spinners. Unless they improve, the series could be as good as over.

It is the Indian spinners ruling the roost, although Shami has been impressive as well. Although the over-dependence on top-order batsmen remains a worry, India look better on paper and form to notch another win.

History & Statistics

  • New Zealand have lost five of their last nine home ODIs.
  • New Zealand haven’t lost three completed ODIs in a row since December 2016.
  • New Zealand have lost four of their seven ODIs at this venue.
  • India have won 16 of their last 21 bilateral ODIs away from home (W16, L5).
  • India have won 12 of their last 16 ODIs played in South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia.

Key Players

With his place in the World Cup squad not yet guaranteed, Colin Munro would want to score more than the 39 runs he managed so far this series.

The Kiwi batsmen were bamboozled by Kuldeep throughout the series, as he continued to be among the wickets. It could be another strong outing from the wrist spinner to lead India to a series win.

Prediction

New Zealand need to improve their batting against the Indian spinners by leaps and bounds to have any chances in this ODI. With the ball, unless they can manage to nip the top-three early, it could be a tough task for the hosts. There are a lot of ifs and buts at the moment in the Kiwi camp, leaving the visitors as strong favourites.

Tips

Back total match sixes to be at least 13 @ $1.90 (bet365).

Back Williamson to score at least one six @ $3.00 (Ladbrokes).

Back Kuldeep Yadav to be top India wicket taker @ $3.40 (Neds).
