New Zealand v India 3rd T20 Tips, Predictions and Preview - India to win series decider

Rohit Sharma bats against New Zealand

After a comprehensive New Zealand win in the first T20I, India bounced back to trounce the hosts in the second and the series now moves to a decider at Seddon Park in Hamilton on Sunday.

With both sides eager to establish their supremacy, the decider promises to be a humdinger. Interestingly, the teams met here in the fourth ODI earlier in the series when Trent Boult’s swing destroyed India.

New Zealand

While Tim Seifert (84 off 43 balls) bossed the show in the first match, the second match saw a complete reversal of fortunes. Only a late-order flourish from Ross Taylor (42 off 36) and Colin de Grandhomme (50 off 28) spared the blushes in Auckland.

None of the bowlers could have an impact on the determined Indians, which meant the gains of the first T20I evaporated quickly. Lockie Ferguson continues to impress with his pace and could be crucial to their hopes of setting up a series win.

India

After a sluggish start to the T20I series, where the batting flopped in the first match, India improved considerably in Auckland. Krunal Pandya (3/28) and Khaleel Ahmed (2/27) impressed with their control.

Rohit Sharma (50 off 29) steamrolled the Kiwi bowlers into submission in the chase. Rishabh Pant’s runs at one-down (40* off 28) eased the nerves and gave a fillip to the visitors’ hopes of winning the series decider.

Match Up

New Zealand couldn’t recover from a poor start in Auckland, as they failed to challenge the control of the Indian bowlers. The top-order success is so crucial for the Kiwis, considering the firepower they posses in the middle and late orders.

India continued to show that their bowlers can hold their own in the absence of top players. Momentum is clearly on their side and with the spinners keeping it tight, they look set for another good performance.

History & Statistics

  • New Zealand are the only side against whom India have lost more T20Is than wins – the Kiwis have won seven of the ten.
  • The Kiwis have won three of the four T20Is they played in New Zealand against India.
  • New Zealand have won six of the eight T20Is they played at this venue, but have lost two of the last four.
  • The last time India lost a T20I series of two matches or more was in August 2016.

Key Players

Scores of 34 & 12 don’t do justice to Colin Munro’s potential in the shortest format. The Kiwi opener is a destructive presence at the top and can take the game away in the space of an over or two.

Krunal Pandya has been impressive this series and his returns of 1/37 and 3/28 speak volumes of his excellent control. The orthodox spinner will be crucial for India’s plans of keeping it tight in the middle overs.

Prediction

New Zealand will be worried about the extreme swings in their batting performances – from being exceptional in the first match to being poor in the second. It will be a test of the Kiwi batting against the impressive Indian bowling, which could determine the series winner.
