With two successive wins, Pakistan have stormed back to contention for the top-four spots of the 2019 ICC World Cup and they will battle Afghanistan at Headingley in Leeds on Saturday.

Seven points in as many games and Pakistan are just one point behind the fourth-placed England. With their inferior run-rate, they will hope to see England lose both their remaining matches. Beating Afghanistan is up top on that priority list, though. The Afghans have no wins in seven matches and are destined to finish bottom of the table.

Pakistan

A much-changed and spirited Pakistan bounced back from the loss to India to pick up consecutive wins. South Africa and New Zealand were swatted aside, as Pakistan continue to dream. With their batting mainstay Babar Azam (333 runs, SR 85.16) continuing to shoulder the burden, Pakistan start this encounter high on confidence.

The form of Mohammad Amir (16 wickets) with the ball is heartening to see. With Shaheen Afridi and Shadab Khan showing signs of picking up form in their previous match against New Zealand, Pakistan look to have ironed out their bowling concerns.

Afghanistan

Off-field issues mar Afghanistan’s World Cup sojourn, as Aftab Alam joins the list of ousted players. Regardless, the Afghans have struggled to assert themselves with both bat and the ball. They have no players aggregating 200 runs in the tournament, a barometer of their struggles.

Captain Gulbadin Naib remains their best bowler with nine wickets, but the ineffectiveness of their slow bowlers remains a concern, If Leeds offers a bit of spin assistance, the trio of Afghan slow bowlers will help them come into the game.

Match Up

Pakistan are a tough team to play, when they are bouncing with confidence. They are on a high after defeating New Zealand and should be looking forward to booking another win. With England playing India next, there is every chance that a win for Pakistan in this match will propel them into the top-four. It will be a test for the Afghanistan bowlers against the confident Pakistan batsmen.

History & Statistics

  • Pakistan haven’t won three ODIs in a row since September 2018.
  • Seven of Pakistan’s last ten ODI losses have come while bowling first.
  • Seventeen of Pakistan’s last 23 WC wins have come while batting first.
  • Pakistan have won all the three H2Hs, after losing the toss in all games.
  • Afghanistan have lost their last seven ODIs.
  • Five of Afghanistan’s last six ODI wins have come batting first.
  • Afghanistan have lost 12 of 13 WC ODIs.

Key Players

Babar Azam has shown the full extent of his batting prowess against New Zealand. He will once again look to lead from the front with a big score.

Hashmatullah Shahidi has been the lone shining point for Afghanistan with the bat. Although his scoring rates have been lower than required for ODIs, the left-hander looks to be the only one capable of keeping the Pakistan bowlers at bay.
