Pakistan v Australia 2nd ODI Tips, Predictions and Preview - Aussies to take a 2-0 lead

Usman Khawaja

Australia continued their momentum from their India tour winning the first ODI against Pakistan in Sharjah comfortably by eight wickets. That sets the tone for the rest of the series, as the teams end their Sharjah leg of the ODI tour with the second match on Sunday.

The Green Caps made some sweeping changes to their playing XI to rest their regulars. It did pay off with the bat, as Haris Sohail (101 off 114 balls) picked up his maiden ODI century. Umar Akmal (48 off 50) and Imad Wasim (28 off 13) also showed some spunk.

However, poor scoring rate in the middle overs did Pakistan in, as their score was easily overhauled by Australia. Yasir Shah couldn’t have the same threatening impact as he was expected to, while the pace bowlers struggled all through. If they want to stay alive in the series and keep ticking, getting their house in order is a must.

Winning their fourth match on the trot was a sign of things that Australia are on the comeback trail. The bowlers didn’t allow Pakistan to run away with the score at any stage of the first innings. And when it was their turn to bat, captain Aaron Finch (116 off 135) and Shaun Marsh (91* off 102) eased the chase with attractive knocks.

The most important aspect for Finch is the balance in his side, as they look to continue their winning momentum. The scope for experimentation could come later in the series, but with two spinners at his disposal, Finch might look to repeat the dose and march ahead for a 2-0 lead.

Match Up

The first ODI loss was such a game that Pakistan wouldn’t be concerned about the result, as much as their bench strength. Mohammad Amir looked listless, while Yasir Shah was picked up with ease. Will they get another chance? Even if they do, this could be their last chance to impress.

After a long time, Australia look in complete control of their fortunes. They can even manage to rotate the squad, but Finch could resist the urge until he wins the series. Of course, Pat Cummins could press for a game after sitting out of the first game.

History & Statistics

  • Pakistan have lost seven of their last ten completed ODIs.
  • In the UAE, they have won 11 of their last 16 completed ODIs, but just two of their last seven.
  • Pakistan have lost ten of their last 11 ODIs against Australia.
  • Australia have won nine of their last 11 ODIs against Pakistan in UAE.

Key players

The way he batted in the first match, it looked as if Akmal was never out of the national side. Of course, he remains an enigmatic presence considering the way he marries inconsistency with flamboyant shots.

It has taken him 12 games to find his hundred-scoring form once again, but Finch is surely back to form now. His presence at the top is such a soothing presence for Australia who can enjoy his runs.

Australia looked the dominant side in the first match and should remain the same on Sunday. Pakistan have a number of individual match winners and can make a fist of this contest. However, their inconsistencies far outweigh their positives and that is a boon for the visitors.
