Pakistan v Australia 3rd ODI Tips, Predictions and Preview - visitors to clinch series

Aaron Finch

Back-to-back comfortable eight-wicket wins give Australia a 2-0 lead going into the third ODI against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi.

The visitors have been impressive in both the matches and will be keen to clinch the series at the first time of asking.

Pakistan

The hosts found a new hero in Mohammad Rizwan (115) for the second ODI, but the lack of push from their middle order didn’t do any favours to their score. The absence of regular stars isn’t helping their chances, but the bigger worry is that their bench players aren’t grabbing their chances.

Bowling remains a big concern for stand-in skipper Shoaib Malik with just three wickets picked up by their bowlers this series. Mohammad Abbas showed the virtues of tight lines and Mohammad Hasnain showed promise, but that is where it ended for Pakistan.

Australia

It is now five wins on the trot for Australia, going back to their Indian tour. Captain Aaron Finch continues to scorch the scoring sheets and has picked up his second century on the run (153*) to lead them to an easy win. With Usman Khawaja also in prime form and the top-order scoring runs at will, Australia will be confident of continuing their winning momentum.

Jhye Richardson’s injury is a concern, as the fast bowler could be out of contention for the rest of the series. There is enough depth in the squad, though, and Finch will have no worries on his bowling front.

Match Up

The continued inefficiencies of their bowling remain a headache for Pakistan. They are usually adept at defending 280+ scores on dry tracks, but this series is proving to be elusive. Unless the bowlers start contributing, there don’t seem to be a way out of the mess for Pakistan.

Not long ago, Australia were being written off in this format. Five wins on the trot and they now look back in the saddle. All the top-order batsmen look in fine nick and even Richardson’s injury is no dampener for the side.

History & Statistics

  • Pakistan have lost eight of their last 11 completed ODIs.
  • In the UAE, they have won just two of their last eight.
  • Pakistan have lost 11 of their last 12 ODIs against Australia.
  • Australia have won ten of their last 12 ODIs against Pakistan in UAE.

Key players

Has the absence of Fakhar Zaman robbed Imam-ul-Haq of his consistency? One of the most successful Pakistani batsmen of recent times has been struggling to score runs this series. Time to set that record straight?

Maxwell didn’t get many chances to flex his arms, but his ability to bowl some quiet overs and be among the runs from ball one is a huge plus for Australia. He might even get a promotion to show his strength.

Prediction

Australia should continue their hold on the series, as they understand the perils of loosening the grip. They themselves have come from 0-2 down to win 3-2 against India, and wouldn’t want to let Pakistan off the hook.
