Pakistan v Australia 4th ODI Tips, Predictions and Preview - Aussies bid for fourth win

Aaron Finch

Another comprehensive win (80 runs) in the third ODI gave Australia an unassailable 3-0 series lead against Pakistan. The teams now move to Dubai for the last two ODIs in three days, with the first of those slated for Friday.

The series may be won and lost, but both sides have a lot on their plate ahead of the ICC World Cup squad selection.

Pakistan

If the objective of the series was to test the bench strength and find suitable backups, Pakistan failed in that so far. The bowling looked listless and the batting inconsistent with a lot of question marks over most of these players. Come the England tour, a lot of these bench warmers may cease to be even benchwarmers.

Haris Sohail (136 runs, SR 81.93) looked a touch above the rest, but his strike rate still leaves a lot to be desired. Even Shoaib Malik has been struggling for runs, which is an indicator of how tough it has been for Pakistan. None more so than the bowling unit that has struggled to take wickets throughout.

Australia

With confidence sky-high after a successful Indian ODI tour, Australia have ticked most of the boxes on this tour. Captain Aaron Finch (359 runs, SR 86.71) has enjoyed a purple patch and looks to have regained his mojo. Glenn Maxwell’s belligerence in the third ODI (71 off 55 balls) showed the value of his hitting to this Aussie line-up.

Adam Zampa and Pat Cummins continued from the highs of their Indian tour, leaving Finch with nothing much to worry about. With Nathan Lyon also chipping in (ER 5.0), Australia are enjoying the fruits of a settled squad.

Match Up

Pakistan will hope for a better batting performance from their seniors, with Imam-ul-Haq and Shoaib Malik not pulling their weight. Bowling remains a major worry, considering the inability of the pacers to be effective.

Now that the series is in the bank, Australia can choose to rotate the squad. Ashton Turner could get a chance to impress, although making wholesale changes might not be on the cards.

History & Statistics

  • Pakistan have lost nine of their last 12 (75%) completed ODIs.
  • In the UAE, they have won just two of their last nine.
  • Pakistan have now lost 12 of their last 13 ODIs against Australia.
  • Australia have won 11 of their last 13 ODIs against Pakistan in UAE.

Key Players

When Sarfaraz Ahmed was banned in South Africa, Shoaib Malik did a great job as a stand-in. So much so, that he was being touted as the permanent choice for the World Cup. His stock has come down crashing since then, but a bigger worry is his dwindling returns at the crease.

When he sets his sights on dominating the bowling, there is rarely any better destructive batsman than Maxwell. With his spot in the squad settled now, Australia are reaping rewards of his clear hitting.

Prediction

There is so much quality and confidence in the Australian squad at the moment, that Pakistan will have to improve by leaps and bounds to be competitive. For the moment, it is the Kangaroos who look set for another win.
