Pakistan v Australia 5th ODI Tips, Predictions and Preview - Aussies bid for 5-0 whitewash

Two centuries in a chasing cause resulting in a loss is not something you would generally witness, but Pakistan had that ignominy in the fourth ODI to hand a 4-0 lead to Australia.

The sides now complete the series with the fifth and last ODI on Sunday. Can the hosts avoid a clean sweep?

Pakistan

It was only the second time in their ODI history that two Pakistani batsmen scored centuries in a chase. The 144-run third-wicket partnership between Abid Ali and Mohammed Rizwan was Pakistan’s best-ever against Australia. However, nothing could lift their side to a win.

A large part of the blame should be borne by their second-string bowlers. The usual flair seen in any Pakistani line-up was missing, with even the experienced Yasir Shah struggling for impact (four wickets, ER 5.50).

Australia

The visitors have had no such problems, with captain Aaron Finch (398 runs, Avg. 132.66) leading the run glut. There have been impressive performances from Usman Khawaja as well, who is now the highest run-scorer in 2019 ODIs (671 runs, Avg. 55.91).

Even with the regular bowlers rested and/or rotated, Australia enjoyed the upper hand. Adam Zampa (six wickets, ER 4.86) has been their leading light, while the absence of Pat Cummins (who played just one ODI) hasn’t been felt even remotely.

Match Up

Shoaib Malik missed the fourth ODI because of an injury and could be back for this match. Rizwan’s form is a huge positive, but Pakistan’s famed bowling resources suddenly look depleted of energy and effectiveness.

There could be some changes to the Aussie playing XI considering their need to fine tune their World Cup preparations. Most of the bases are covered, but the role of Marcus Stoinis remains under the cloud.

History & Statistics

  • Pakistan have now lost 13 of their last 14 ODIs against Australia.
  • Pakistan have lost their last eight ODIs against Australia in UAE.
  • Two times before, Pakistan have been clean swept by Australia – once each in Pakistan (1998/99) and UAE (2014/15).
  • Australia have won 12 of their last 14 ODIs against Pakistan in UAE.
  • Australia have clean swept a five-match ODI series five times before, the last was at home against West Indies in 2013.

Key Players

Rizwan finds a lot of supporters among the Pakistani fans, who want him as their first-choice ‘keeper. He has certainly done no harm to his chances by blasting a couple of centuries in the series.

While all the attention has been on the top-order, Alex Carey has been calm and calculative in his knocks right from the start of the Indian series. With his first ODI half-century out of the way, Carey could be looking to be Australia’s saviour down the order.

Prediction

Can Pakistan avert the white wash? They will be very disappointed at losing the fourth ODI having come so close to winning. The threat of being clean swept could bring the best out of this misfiring Pakistan unit. Backing them to win the game comes with risky proportions, but for once it might prove helpful.

Tips

Back Pakistan to win @ $2.50 (Ladbrokes).

Back total match sixes to be under 8.5 @ $1.72 (bet365).

Back Rizwan to score a fifty @ $3.75 (Ladbrokes).
