Pakistan v New Zealand 2nd ODI Tips, Predictions and Match Preview - Black Caps bid to seal series

Pakistan and New Zealand

New Zealand’s 12th consecutive ODI win over Pakistan was sealed in an emphatic fashion in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday as the visitors took a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

It wasn’t a completely dominating performance, but still the Kiwis did just enough to stay ahead of Pakistan. Will they be able to repeat the trick? Can Pakistan bounce back? All questions will be answered on Friday as the teams meet again in Abu Dhabi for the 2nd ODI.

Pakistan Match Preview

Pakistan’s bowling on Wednesday was all about two bowlers – Shaheen Afridi (4/46) and Shadab Khan (4/38). The lanky fast bowler took care of the Kiwis top-order before coming back at the fag end, while the leg-spinner was in his elements with the middle order.

The target of 267 needed the top-order to fire, but Fakhar Zaman (1), Babar Azam (0) and Mohammad Hafeez (0) were sent back by a Trent Boult hat-trick that sealed the deal.

Sarfraz Ahmed (64) and Imad Wasim (50) fought till the end, but it was always a lost cause and Pakistan lost by 47 runs.

New Zealand Match Preview

Ross Taylor (80) and Tom Latham (68) gave the Kiwis a much-needed platform on either side of the fall of wickets. However, at 210/7 it looked as if they will fold out for much lesser, before Ish Sodhi (24 off 19) lifted them to 266/9.

Boult became the third New Zealand to take an ODI hat-trick and that was enough to put Pakistan on the back foot from the start. Lockie Ferguson (3/36) and Colin de Grandhomme (2/40) made sure that the wickets kept coming.

The result was never in doubt and New Zealand made it 12 victories over Pakistan on the trot.

Match Up

Pakistan’s success in the T20Is was based on the starts given by Zaman, Azam and Hafeez. The trio will once again be the fulcrum of their hopes.

New Zealand are a team of individuals and they proved it in the first ODI. Their ability to take the game deep and make it count with their all-rounders gives them an edge.

History & Statistics

  • Pakistan have won ten of their last 14 ODIs played in UAE.
  • Pakistan have won four of their last six ODIs played in Abu Dhabi.
  • New Zealand have won their last 12 ODIs against Pakistan.
  • New Zealand have won 11 of their last 14 ODIs.

Key Players

After the highs of T20I series, Azam was brought crashing back to earth with a first-ball duck, although he was up against an inspired Boult. He would certainly be itching to settle the scores better.

His ability to play spin better than the other Kiwi batsmen makes Tom Latham an important member of this New Zealand line-up. If he can keep rotating the strike freely, runs will never be a worry for the visitors.

Tips

Back the total runs in the match to be over 500.5 at odds of $1.83 (bet365).

Back Latham to hit over 0.5 sixes at odds of $3.25 (Ladbrokes).

Back Azam to score a fifty at odds of $2.62 (Ladbrokes).
