Pakistan v New Zealand 2nd T20 Tips, Predictions and Match Preview - Pakistan bid for 2-0 lead

Pakistan and New Zealand meet in the second T20

New Zealand made a mockery of their seven-month absence from international cricket by pushing Pakistan to the limit in the 1st T20I of the three-match series.

However, it is the hosts who took the win by two runs and extend their unbeaten run. The series now moves to Dubai for the second match on Friday.

Match Preview

Pakistan extended their winning run in T20Is, winning their seventh match in a row by defeating the Kiwis on Wednesday in Abu Dhabi. Batting first, Pakistan overcame the early dismissals of openers Babar Azam (7) and Sahizada Farhan (1) to post 148 for 6. It was the experienced Mohammad Hafeez (45 off 36 balls) who led from the front.

There were contributions from Sarfraz Ahmed (34) and Asif Ali (24), but it was the New Zealand fielding that caught the eye. Spectacular catches and crucial saves kept Pakistan to a score that could have been chased down. It was only the last two overs that gave them 25 runs, which pushed Pakistan to a competitive score.

New Zealand started slow in the chase, but opener Colin Munro’s presence in the middle (58 off 42 balls) meant that the Kiwis were always in with a chance. Pakistan leaked 50 runs in the powerplay, but off-spinner Mohammad Hafeez (3-0-13-0) and leg-spinner Shadab Khan (4-0-26-1) squeezed runs in the middle overs.

Fast bowler Hasan Ali (4-0-35-3) made sure that wickets kept coming at regular intervals, although Ross Taylor (42* off 26 balls) took the game to the last over. However, it was so close yet so far for the Kiwis falling short in the final stages of the game.

The Kiwis may have conceded the lead, but the performance of Adam Milne (2/28) and the fielding brilliances would have given them confidence ahead of the second game. Pakistan will be buoyed by the fact that they were given a tough fight for the first time in the summer. It promises to be another close match on Friday, but Pakistan have the edge to continue their winning run.

History & Statistics

Key Players

After being cold shouldered for the Asia Cup, Mohammad Hafeez has bounced back and how! The veteran top-order batsman has scores of 39, 40, 32* and 45 in his last four T20Is and looks set for another good knock.

An ability to play both spin and pace with ease makes Munro a tough player to bowl at. He started the series with a top score and will once again be crucial to his side’s hopes of surprising the hosts.
