Pakistan v New Zealand 2nd Test Tips, Predictions and Match Preview - Pakistan bid to level series

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson

After a stunning turnaround and the fifth-narrowest win in Test cricket, New Zealand bring a 1-0 lead to Dubai for the second of the three-match Test series against Pakistan starting on Saturday.

It was a match that fluctuated between the two sides, eventually siding with the Kiwis. Pakistan will rue the fact that they collapsed at the most inopportune moment in the match. Will the Green Caps set their house in order and get back in the series?

Pakistan Match Preview

On a track where both sets of batsmen struggled, Pakistan’s scores of 227 and 171 didn’t do justice to their potential. Asad Shafiq (43 & 45), Azhar Ali (22 & 65) and Babar Azam (62 & 13) showed glimpses of their potential, but were unable to put in a big score.

With the ball, Pakistan enjoyed the return to form of leg-spinner Yasir Shah (3/54 & 5/110), although Mohammad Abbas’ poor returns hurt them the most. If Abbas finds his range once again and the others chip around him, Pakistan will be a tough team to face in these conditions.

New Zealand Match Preview

Kane Williamson (63 &37) was the leader with the bat for New Zealand, while second innings fifties for Henry Nicholls and BJ Watling made sure that Pakistan had to chase 175, which in the end proved just enough.

While the failure of Tom Latham (13 & 0) will cause the Kiwis to look inward for solutions, the all-round performance of the bowling unit is a cause for cheer. Left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel (2/64 & 5/59) put in a match-winning spell, while every other bowler contributed their bit.

Match Up

Pakistan still remain the side to beat, despite their shocking collapse in Abu Dhabi that has left them red-faced. Improved batting performances from Azhar, Shafiq and Azam should lead the side in their quest to make a comeback.

New Zealand have a great chance to win the series, but know that it will take another all-round effort to stay in the contest. Williamson’s knocks will be crucial for the Kiwis, once again.

History & Statistics

The win in Abu Dhabi was New Zealand’s 11th in 56 Tests against Pakistan.
The lone Test payed between these sides at this venue in 2014 ended as a draw.
New Zealand have won two, drawn one and lost just one of their four Tests played in the UAE.

Key Players

Rated as one of the most technically gifted Pakistan batsmen, Azhar Ali came very close to leading his side to a win in the first match. Notwithstanding that result, he will feel in good touch and look to build on that performance.

Williamson’s runs will once again be the focus of New Zealand charge as they look to make history with another win in this match.

Tips

Back Azhar Ali to score a fifty in the first innings at odds of $3.00 (Ladbrokes).
