Pakistan v New Zealand 3rd Test Tips, Predictions and Match Preview - Who will win the series decider?

Ross Taylor

Two convincing wins – one for each team – later, the Pakistan v New Zealand Test series returns to the scene of the first Test for the series decider.

Witness to one of the best and closest Test matches of all time, Abu Dhabi couldn’t have asked for a better finale.

However, the manner in which New Zealand capitulated to Yasir Shah in the second Test in Dubai raises concerns of the visitors. Can they revive their performances and match the heroics of the hosts?

Pakistan Match Preview

Yasir tormented the Kiwis with guile, dip and turn for a match-winning haul of 14 wickets. Such was his dominance that New Zealand folded out from 50/0 in their first innings to 90 all out. Haris Sohail (147) and Babar Azam (127*) scored at a snail pace, but in the wake of Yasir’s spell, it didn’t matter.

Pakistan will miss fast bowler Mohammad Abbas for this match due to an injury, but the exciting quick Shaheen Shah Afridi is all set for a debut. Also in line for a game is the all-rounder Faheem Ashraf making it a three-pronged fast-bowling attack on a pitch that is seamer-friendly.

New Zealand Match Preview

The dreaded capitulation in the first innings aside, New Zealand did put up a fight in the second innings scoring their first overseas 300+ innings score in the last three years. Ross Taylor (82) and Henry Nicholls (77) showed some spine, although the match was as good as over after the first innings.

New Zealand, however, have happy memories of the ground and will look to enjoy the pace of the pitch. All-rounder Colin de Grandhomme’s place could come under scrutiny, as experienced seamer Tim Southee could make a return to the side. It is, however, the lack of runs from their batsmen that will be the headache for captain Kane Williamson.

Match Up

Azhar Ali’s consistency with the bat is a huge plus and Afridi as a replacement for Abbas is another positive for Pakistan.

New Zealand need runs from their top-order, although changes are expected in their bowling attack. Ish Sodhi’s indifferent Test form and the lack of fight puts them on the back foot.

History & Statistics

Over the last three years in overseas Tests (barring Zimbabwe), New Zealand have won only once – in Abu Dhabi in the first match.
New Zealand have not won a series against Pakistan in their last seven attempts away from home. Their last series win was in 1969-70.
Yasir Shah has 195 wickets from 32 Tests and needs five wickets to become the quickest bowler to 200 Test wickets.

Key Players

He has already impressed in the white ball format and Afridi will be keen to get his red ball career off to a flying start. His height and the ability to generate awkward bounce could work to his advantage.

Nicholls is the leading run-scorer for the Kiwis so far and has been the most consistent of the lot. If the visitors are to have any chance, it will depend on the runs from Nicholls’ blade.

Tips

Back Ross Taylor to score a fifty in the match at odds of $2.10 (bet365).

Back Azhar Ali to score a fifty in the first innings at odds of $2.50 (Ladbrokes).

Back Shaheen Afridi to be the top Pakistan bowler in the first innings at odds of $5.00 (Sportsbet).
