Pakistan v Sri Lanka Cricket World Cup Tips, Predictions and Preview - Pakistan start as favourites

Pakistan's Mohammad Amir

After contrasting wins in their respective second matches of the ICC World Cup 2019 campaign, Pakistan and Sri Lanka meet in Bristol on Friday.

With wet weather a likely irritant, both sides will keep an anxious eye out for the rain in their bid to pick up a second win.

Pakistan lost to West Indies by seven wickets, but bounced back to defeat favourites England by 14 runs. Sri Lanka also started with a ten-wicket loss to New Zealand, but then bounced back in style to edge out Afghanistan by 34 runs in a DLS result.

Pakistan

The ‘Men in Green Caps’ have shown both extremes of their game in the tournament. While the match against Windies was of poor batting, the game against England was full of passion and performance. Mohammad Hafeez (100 runs) remains their best bat of the tournament, while Babar Azam is just easing into his role.

Mohammad Amir (five wickets) has found a new lease of life this tournament and Pakistan will hope for more from him. With overcast conditions set to be a threat, Pakistan will hope to keep their spirits up.

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka haven’t really played to their potential, struggling with the bat in both the matches. Only Dimuth Karunaratne (82 runs) and Kusal Perera (107) have shown a bit of form.

Bowlers have struggled through, although Nuwan Pradeep’s four wickets against Afghanistan is a positive sign. Lasith Malinga also showed coming back to his best form, which is good news for captain Karunaratne.

Match Up

The unpredictable Pakistan continue to surprise everyone. Should they bring the same passion to this match, Sri Lanka will be in trouble. Their batting seemed to have picked up momentum, but needs to continue in the same breath.

Sri Lanka are already in trouble, considering the poor exhibition of their skills this tournament. Although they have won against Afghanistan, it highlighted their middle order weaknesses and inability to pick up wickets in the middle overs.

History & Statistics

  • Pakistan’s Babar Azam has 14 straight double figure innings in ODIs.
  • Pakistan have won their last six matches against Sri Lanka.
  • On this ground, the chasing side has won ten of the last 17 completed ODIs.
  • Sri Lanka have won ten of their last 15 World Cup games.
  • Sri Lanka have lost all seven World Cup matches against Pakistan.

Key Players

Amir’s pace and zip looks to have come back as he has shown in his performances so far. With an ability to bring the ball back in, Amir can be a tough cookie for the struggling Sri Lankan batsmen.

Pradeep has shown that he can come out of the long shadows of Malinga and carve a niche for himself. His zip and bounce off the track should work in Lanka’s favour.
