Perth Scorchers v Melbourne Stars BBL Tips, Predictions and Preview - Stars to claim crucial win

Marcus Stonis of the Stars

The misery of Perth Scorchers in BBL08 is about to come to an end with the already-eliminated former champions playing Melbourne Stars at Optus Stadium on Sunday.

The Scorchers (W3, L9) are sat at the wrong end of the table after a horror season and could end up with the wooden spoon. For the Stars (W6, L5), this game is a great chance to keep winning and staying in touch with the top-four.

Perth Scorchers

Batting collapses have become synonymous with the Scorchers this BBL season. They have now lost their last four matches and are struggling to find a way back into the winning streak. Interestingly, two of their three wins have come at home.

No one has been turning up at the top of the order for the Scorchers, with Cameron Bancroft (232 runs) and Ashton Turner (309 runs) remaining their lone shining points. Bowling has struggled too, and Andrew Tye’s 14 wickets have come a bit too late in the day.

Melbourne Stars

It has been a dream comeback by the Stars, after starting the season a bit below-par. They have won four of their last five matches, including the last three in a row. With this being their game in hand, they will look to keep winning and move up the table.

The all-round skills of Marcus Stoinis (312 runs, SR 132.20) has been a huge bonus for the Stars, who have struggled for runs otherwise. With the ball too, Stoinis (14 wickets) and Dwayne Bravo (14 wickets) that lead their charts.

Match Up

The Scorchers have had a nightmare season so far, but would like to reward their home fans with a win. However, there is very little in their batting performances to be confident about an upset.

Confidence is running high in the Stars’ camp about their chances of making to the finals, although they can still theoretically slip. The consistency of Stoinis and Liam Plunkett gives the Stars a bit of an advantage, staying ahead of their hosts.

Key Battles

Bancroft remains one of the few bright spots for the Scorchers in a season that has been underwhelming, to say the least. Another attempt at improving his side’s fortunes will come handy.

Who else but Stoinis. The all-rounder has been a massive presence for the Stars this season and will be itching to go after being released by the national team.

History & Statistics

  • Scorchers have won the last three matches against the Stars.

Prediction

Conditions will play a key role in this match, as the Perth Stadium offers pace and bounce for those willing to bend their back. Still, there is enough in the tank for the Stars to brush aside the hosts and pick up a win.
