Sri Lanka v England T20 Tips, Predictions and Match Preview - England to win standalone T20

Sri Lanka and England

After a comfortable 3-1 win in the ODI series, England will play Sri Lanka in the only T20I on Saturday before moving to the Test series.

This match will be played at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo with the hosts looking to build on their surprise win in the final ODI of the series.

Match Preview

After coming second best in the three of the first four matches (with one abandoned), Sri Lanka sparked to life in the last and inconsequential match of the series on Tuesday. A 219-run Duckworth-Lewis method victory was not just the first time England lost an ODI by more than 200 runs, it was also the first comprehensive performance of the series for the hosts.

Surprisingly, it was a win set up by their batsmen as Niroshan Dickwella continued his good form. The stylish Kusal Mendis also got back into some scoring form, which augurs well for the hosts ahead of this T20 International. Bowling also got a boost with T20 stalwart Lasith Malinga drafted into the side after almost one-year absence.

England dominated the series and will rue the fact that they let their captain Eoin Morgan’s absence peg them back in the final ODI. Captain Eoin Morgan got into form with 195 runs in the series, getting dismissed only once, and scoring at a rate of 105.41. He will once again be crucial for the visitors.

The concern for Morgan’s side will be the poor returns of Jos Buttler, who had just 28 runs in the series, although he batted only twice. His T20 form is exceptional, though, with 178 runs in his last four T20 Internationals. Morgan will hope that his talisman batsman will get among the runs once the format changes!

It will be an interesting battle, because Sri Lanka would like to continue their winning run. The momentum from the ODI win should definitely improve their chances, although it is too early to say that their batting has turned consistent. It will be a test of their batting, but one where they are primed to come second best.

History & Statistics

  • Sri Lanka have lost 11 of their last 15 T20Is.
  • Sri Lanka have lost five of their last seven T20Is played at home.
  • England have won three of their last five T20Is.

Key Players

He didn’t get much time in the middle in the ODI series, but the change of format will see Buttler promoted up the order. He has had excellent results as an opener in the IPL and the subsequent T20 Internationals for England.

Sri Lanka will hope that their star bowler Malinga can take care of Buttler and the rest of the England batsmen. After all, the ‘slinger Malinga’ is the original superstar of T20 bowling.

Back England to win the match at odds of $1.50 (bet365).

Back Jos Buttler to score over 24.5 runs at odds of $3.75 (Ladbrokes).

Back Lasith Malinga to be the top Sri Lanka team bowler at odds of $4.33 (bet365).
