A high scorer on Sunday saw New Zealand once again show their resilience to pick up a five-wicket win over Sri Lanka and the series is now on the line for Sri Lankan youngsters.

Interestingly, both sides are looking at the bigger picture of 2020 World T20 and could look to make changes in view of the same. That said, expect a tight contest for supremacy, one where the resilient visitors hold a slight edge.

Sri Lanka

A blazing knock from Kusal Mendis at the top (79 off 53 balls) laid the platform for a score of 174 for 4 for the hosts. There were handy knocks from Niroshan Dickwella (33 off 25) and Dasun Shanaka (17* off 12) to prop the score.

With the ball, the ever-green Lasith Malinga (2 for 23) and leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga (2 for 21) enjoyed the conditions. However, the hosts wilted under Taylor’s onslaught in the slog overs to lose the initiative. Any chances on Tuesday will depend a lot on how well the other bowlers can step up to support Malinga.

New Zealand

Tim Southee (2 for 20) led from the front to keep the Kiwis in the game with an incisive spell. Although their top-order flopped, the Kiwis had their middle-order to thank for the win. Colin de Grandhomme (44 off 28) and Ross Taylor (48 off 29) were at their scintillating best to puncture the hosts.

The Kiwis will hope to continue the same rich form, although concerns over the poor form of Martin Guptill remain. Also of worry is their struggles against the leg-spin of Hasaranga.

Match Up

The first match was a close affair until Taylor decided to take it away from Sri Lanka. In the absence of Kane Williamson and the struggling Munro, Taylor remains New Zealand’s best bet with the bat. As for the Lankans, they would hope for at least one bowler to step up and support Malinga. It should be another entertaining encounter, however, with both sides taking the game to the final over.

History & Statistics

  • Sri Lanka have won eight of their 11 T20Is at this venue (W8, L3).
  • Sri Lanka have lost only one of their five matches at this venue while batting first.
  • Sri Lanka have won only one of its six T20I H2Hs at home (W1, L3, T1, NR1).
  • Sri Lanka have lost ten of their last 13 home T20Is.
  • New Zealand have lost seven of their last 11 T20Is.
  • New Zealand have lost seven of their last nine T20Is away from home, including five of the last six.

Key Players

Kusal Mendis’ best scores have come as an opener and it was no surprise that he was used at the top in the first T20I. Expect the stylish player to play another crucial knock.

Taylor remains New Zealand’s best chance to keep their scores in the high 180s. With him in the middle-order providing the buffer, the Kiwi hard hitters can feel safe and hit out.
