Sri Lanka v New Zealand 2nd Test Tips, Predictions and Preview - Can the Black Caps salvage series draw?

What a match we have had in Galle as Sri Lanka did a Houdini and bossed the fourth innings track to win by six wickets and take a 1-0 lead.

New Zealand did most of the parts right and would have been disappointed with the final day performance. Will the script change at the P Sara Oval in Colombo?

The second Test starts from Thursday and the hosts will look to keep their lead intact, while the visitors will look to draw the series with a win.

Sri Lanka

It was Dimuth Karunaratne (122) who led Sri Lanka with a dazzling knock in the second innings. The hosts will be happy about the way Niroshan Dickwella and the lower-order resisted in the first innings. With the ball, it was the returning Akila Dananjaya (5 for 80) who did the job in the first essay.

What makes the win sweet is the fact that it is the young players who rose to the task. The likes of Kusal Mendis, Kusal Perera and Akila Dananjaya are ready to give ample support to captain Karunaratne. Overall, the Lankans look a better-balanced outfit than the visitors.

New Zealand

It was a cultural shock for the Kiwis, who must have thought they had a chance in the game after setting a target of 268. As the Galle track held forte – quite unlike the venue across the years – the Kiwis attack wilted under pressure.

The biggest concern for the Kiwis was the rare failure with the bat for their talisman – Kane Williamson. The top-order remains a poor cousin of the out-punching lower-order, as all eyes will be on how Ross Taylor, Henry Nicholls and Tom Latham on how they will rally the faltering top-order.

Match Up

Both sides looked short of batting excellence, although Sri Lanka will be better off after the second-innings heroics of Galle. Karunaratne is once again their star with the bat, while Dananjaya is expected to lead the bowling. For the Kiwis, it is an exciting combination of all-round squad, but one that has faltered too many times to expect consistency. However, the need to save the series could spur the Kiwis and backing them to win might not be a bad option.

History & Statistics

  • Sri Lanka have lost seven of their last 11 home Tests, and three of the last four.
  • Sri Lanka have lost five of their last seven Tests at this venue (W2, L5).
  • New Zealand have lost only two Tests since March 2017 (W8, D3, L2).
  • New Zealand have lost six of their last eight away Tests (W2, L6).
  • New Zealand are unbeaten in two H2H Tests at this venue (W1, D1).

Key Players

Karunaratne continued his good form and has added another second innings century to his name. He now has 5x50 and 2x100 in his last 12 innings at home.

Ajaz Patel has turned out to be a specialist overseas spinner for the Kiwis. With his uncanny knack of picking up wickets, the left-arm spinner could be a trump card for the visitors.
