Sri Lanka v New Zealand 3rd T20 Tips, Predictions and Preview - Kiwis chase series whitewash

New Zealand won the series with a tight four-wicket win in the second T20 over Sri Lanka and will be bidding for a whitewash as the series winds down with the third match on Friday.

Martin Guptill and Tom Bruce joined the New Zealand injuries list, along with Lockie Ferguson who has already been withdrawn from the series. Hamish Rutherford is flown in as cover, while the visitors anxiously race against time to field an XI. As for the hosts, the chance to avoid a whitewash should spur them on.

Sri Lanka

A score of 161 was not enough for Sri Lanka to stay alive in the series, as they were brushed aside by a pugnacious Kiwi side. Avishka Fernando (37) and Niroshan Dickwell (39) sparkled with the bat, but the injury to Kusal Mendis (105 series runs) is a concern.

Captain Lasitha Malinga will also be worried about his bowlers, with just Akila Dananjaya (four wickets) consistently troubling the Kiwis. Lakshan Sandakan could get another look-in after a miserly performance (4-0-16-0) in the second match.

New Zealand

Captain Tim Southee (2 for 18) was once again the leader of the show for the Kiwis, with the seamers sharing seven of the nine wickets falling. Colin de Grandhomme (44 off 28 and 59 off 46) has been a revelation with his batting for the Kiwis.

The visitors, however, would be sweating over the fitness of Ross Taylor, who missed the second match. There is a big chance that the latest entrant Rutherford gets a game too.

Match Up

Sri Lanka haven’t been bad with their displays this series, but it was just that New Zealand have been better. The Kiwis showed their mettle and the depth of their T20 squad, but even their depth is being tested by injuries. If there are any more injuries, the Kiwis might be left with less than 11 fit players. Still, it is the visitors who seem to have the edge in the final analysis, thanks to their gritty displays.

History & Statistics

  • Sri Lanka have won eight of their 12 T20Is at this venue (W8, L4).
  • Sri Lanka have won only one of its seven T20I H2Hs at home (W1, L4, T1, NR1).
  • Sri Lanka have lost 11 of their last 14 home T20Is.
  • New Zealand have won their last five T20Is against Sri Lanka with their last loss coming in 2014.

Key Players

Akila Dananjaya has had a mixed season, complete with his bowling action called by the umpires. However, whenever he takes the field, Sri Lanka look a different unit. With his ability to stifle runs and be among the wickets at the same time, Akila remains a vital cog for the hosts.

Colin de Grandhomme has had a great Sri Lanka tour so far. Vital runs in the Test series are followed by two crucial knocks in the T20Is. The burly all-rounder has never had three consecutive T20 innings over 40, but this could be the time to change that stat.
