Sri Lanka’s win over England in their previous game opened up the race for top-four in the 2019 ICC World Cup and the Islanders now face an already eliminated South Africa at Riverside Ground in Chester-le-Street on Friday.

Sri Lanka have six points in six matches and should they win this contest, they would go level with England. An inferior NRR could be a hindrance, but a win would surely boost their hopes. South Africa, on the other hand, have just one win this tournament and are playing for pride.

Sri Lanka

Dimuth Karunaratne’s side hasn’t really looked the deal in the field, which makes their win over England all the more important. While the captain leads the charts with 180 runs, the fact that senior player Angelo Mathews got to form with a patient 85* augurs well.

It is Lasith Malinga’s eight wickets that have kept Sri Lanka in the hunt. The energetic Nuwan Pradeep has also chipped in, but all hopes would be on Malinga to lead the side.

South Africa

It has been a shambolic tournament for the Proteas, who look clueless with both bat and the ball. Rassie van der Dussen (216 runs, SR 87.44) has been their lone shining point of the summer. Apart from him and Quinton de Kock, most of the South African batsmen have struggled for impact.

The biggest disappointment with the ball has been Kagiso Rabada’s inefficiency (six wickets, ER 5.25). Thankfully, the energy and passion of Imran Tahir (ten wickets, ER 4.89) is still burning bright.

Match Up

As they showed against England, Sri Lanka would be comfortable in squeezing the opponents out. The form of their openers and that of Malinga with the ball is going to be crucial as the Islanders chase a must-win.

For South Africa, it will be vital how the seniors respond to their current situation. With nothing left to play, the performances of Tahir, van der Dussen and de Kock could be important in lifting the spirits of the side. One positive for South Africa is their recent H2H record, which is heavily tilted towards them.

History & Statistics

  • Sri Lanka have lost ten of 13 ODIs in 2019 and haven’t won consecutive games since January 2018.
  • Sri Lanka have lost 12 of their last 15 ODIs away from home.
  • Sri Lanka have lost 14 of 20 WC matches played in England.
  • South Africa have won 16 of the last 18 H2Hs, including the last five.
  • South Africa are unbeaten in four H2H WC ODIs (W3, T1), since losing in the 1992 edition.

Key Players

Malinga has been exceptional with the ball against England and would look to continue that against South Africa. He has five wickets against them in two WC matches.

Van der Dussen has a batting average of 71.12 in 13 ODI bats for South Africa. He will once again be crucial for their hopes of a consolation win.
