Sri Lanka v West Indies Cricket World Cup Tips, Predictions and Preview - Sri Lanka bid to keep hopes alive

Sri Lanka's Lasith Malinga

As Sri Lanka get ready to play West Indies in the 2019 ICC World Cup, the Islanders know they must win at Chester-le-Street on Monday.

West Indies are already eliminated, while Sri Lanka need a huge help from other sides to make it to the semis with six points in seven games and a maximum of ten available.

That might not be enough, but still Sri Lanka will look to make it a winning return against West Indies, who will play for pride.

Sri Lanka

It was Sri Lanka’s 20-run win over England that opened up the tournament. However, they have shown the poor side of their game with a nine-wicket loss to South Africa. Overall, it has been a tournament of more downs than lows for the Lankans.

While Dimuth Karunaratne’s form tapered away through the tournament, Avishka Fernando’s aggressive batting is a refreshing change. The old legs of Lasith Malinga continue to shoulder the bowling responsibility for the faltering Sri Lankan unit.

West Indies

The flamboyant Windies have promised much, but have lost out at key moments in the tournament. The win against Pakistan in the tournament opener promised so much, but their journey to the heavy loss against India in their last match was a stark reminder of their downhill form.

Jason Holder will hope that the youngsters Nicholas Pooran and Shimron Hetmyer stay a bit longer at the crease. Bowling has lacked penetration, as well, but the return to form of Kemar Roach is a welcome sign.

Match Up

It will be a challenge for both sets of captains to lift their sides. Sri Lanka, barring the win against England, have been really poor. West Indies started brightly but have lost their way in the middle. It is tough to judge which side starts as favourite, which makes pitch the important variable. Should there be spin, Sri Lanka will fancy their chances. If the pitch, however, behaves the same way it did in the match between Sri Lanka and South Africa, it could be advantage West Indies.

History & Statistics

  • Sri Lanka have lost 11 of 14 ODIs in 2019.
  • Sri Lanka have lost 15 of 21 WC matches played in England.
  • Sri Lanka have won five of their last six H2H ODIs, the last of which was played in 2016.
  • West Indies have lost ten of their last 12 completed ODIs in England (W1, L10, T1).
  • West Indies have lost their last five completed ODIs.
  • West Indies have lost ten of 15 completed ODIs in 2019.

Key Players

Two innings at number three and both the times Avishka Fernando has looked the part. He would look to make it a big knock this time, something which Sri Lanka would dearly want.

Chris Gayle may have announced that he would play another series after the World Cup, but he will be itching to sign off on a high in the World Cup. Can he turn it in style?
