Sydney Sixers v Sydney Thunder BBL Tips, Preview and Prediction - Sixers to win Sydney derby

Daniel Hughes of the Sixers

It is time for the Sydney derby in the Big Bash League when Sydney Sixers take on Sydney Thunder at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on Saturday.

This derby will be crucial for the hopes of Thunder, as they look to gate-crash the top-four. The Sixers (W7, L5) are still not guaranteed of progression and need to get a win to remain in the driving seat. For the Thunder (W5, L6), this is almost a must-win match.

Sydney Sixers

The Sixers are the ‘form team’ of the competition and have won their last three matches on the trot. They also have the incentive of taking revenge on the derby loss in the earlier match this season.

Though there isn’t a single Sixers batsman aggregating more than 300 runs, the consistency of the team is incredible.  Four players have already scored 250+ runs in the tournament, led by Daniel Hughes (294 runs, SR 122.50). Bowling is probably the best of the tournament with four bowlers sharing 63 wickets and all four in the top-15 list.

Sydney Thunder

The Thunder have two wins in their last five (W2, L2, NR1) and have been blowing hot and cold at this crucial stage. They need to win their remaining two matches and hope for help elsewhere to make it to the top-four.

Callum Ferguson (369 runs, SR 141.37) has been the star of the lot with the bat for the Thunder. Shane Watson’s runs (301) have dried up a bit, which is a major cause of concern. Among the bowlers, Daniel Sams (15) and Fawad Ahmed (13) remain top of the tree.

Match Up

The Sixers have based their season on the success of their bowling, which remains their biggest bet for this match as well. Even their batting looks solid, without being spectacular, which is exactly what their impressive bowling unit needs.

For the Thunder, it is the case of finding runs from Watson or depending once again on Ferguson. There is too much uncertainty around the squad, although they have managed to remain on the coat tails of the top-four.

Key Battles

Sean Abbott (18 wickets) continues to pick wickets consistently, making him a very tough customer to face. His battle with Ferguson could make interesting reading, as the Thunder batsman is slowly coming to terms with converting his good starts into solid ones.

History & Statistics

  • Sixers have won seven of the ten matches they won the toss against the Thunder.
  • Sixers have a 9-5 win-loss record against the Thunder.
  • However, the Thunder have won five of the last seven matches.
  • Home side has won the last four matches in this encounter.
  • Thunder have won just two of the six matches played at the SCG, but those two have come in the last three.

Prediction

Both sides need a win for different reasons, but it is the Sixers that bring a lot more balanced outlook to this game. The Thunder can blast any team on their day, but their inconsistent season makes us wonder if they really deserve a top-four place. The Sixers are marginally ahead of their cross-town visitors and could continue that with a win.

Tips

Back the Sixers to win @ $1.71 (Sportsbet).

Back the Thunder to score the most 6s @ $2.40 (Sportsbet).

Back Ferguson to score at least one six @ $2.25 (Ladbrokes).
