Sydney Thunder v Brisbane Heat BBL Tips, Predictions and Preview - Can Heat win again?

Brisbane Heat

After picking up their first win of the season in the BBL08 season, Brisbane Heat will travel to the Spotless Stadium on Tuesday to face Sydney Thunder.

The Thunder (W3, L3) have been blowing hot and cold through the season, which is not a good sign for their playoff chances. The Heat (W1, L3) still have games in hand, but dropping points won’t help their chances either.

Sydney Thunder

English import Jos Buttler (268 runs, SR 137.43) has been scoring big for the Thunder so far this season. Callum Ferguson (142 runs, SR 125.66) has been equally good, while all-rounder Daniel Sams (135 runs, nine wickets) has been a revelation.

However, the worry for the Thunder is their over-reliance on Buttler and Sams. Though Fawad Ahmed (seven wickets, ER 7.60) has been impressive, the lack of penetration with the new ball remains a worry. Chris Green (ER 6.61, SR 139.21) could be a trump card, but is not yet utilised to the full extent.

Brisbane Heat

A win after three losses in the season brings the Heat back into the reckoning. Chris Lynn (179 runs, SR 122.60) is just getting into his groove and his absence from the national ODI side will help the Heat. Afghan mystery bowler Mujeeb Ur Rahman (four wickets, ER 5.56) has been consistently frugal, which augurs well.

That said, the Heat miss a standout bowler who can lead their attack. Even with the bat, the poor returns of Brendon McCullum (30 runs, SR 100) are a major worry. Ben Cutting’s all-round returns (SR 150.81, four wickets) remain a positive, though.

Match Up

It is a match up between two sides whose balance remains skewed. The Thunder remain over-dependent on Buttler, while the continued poor show of Joe Root is a cause of concern.

For the Heat, the absence of a strike bowler is a worry, although Mujeeb is doing his bit to keep things tight. The return of Brendan Doggett is a huge positive, but unless their bowling clicks there don’t seem to be a way out for the Heat.

Key Battles

When Buttler fails, the Thunder fail to click – as simple as that. The English international’s quick starts at the top takes the pressure off their middle-order and will once again be their best hope.

Scores of 4, 4, 8 & 14 don’t do justice to the mayhem that McCullum can create with the bat. His fielding hasn’t gone down even a bit, but it is imperative that he gets back to form with the bat.
