West Indies v India 1st T20 Tips, Predictions and Preview - Windies to win in Florida

When it comes to T20 cricket, there is nothing more exciting than seeing the West Indian players in full flow and they do that when India come to town for a fully-fledged tour starting with the three-match T20I series.

The first two games will be played back-to-back in Florida, starting this Saturday. The excitement in the two camps is palpable, with the Windies welcoming back their exiled T20 specialists and India ringing in the changes after the World Cup disappointment.

Windies

Carlos Brathwaite remains in the saddle for the hosts, who boast of the best-of-the-best names in modern T20 cricket. Chris Gayle, Kieron Pollard, Andre Russell, Sunil Narine – just a tip of the iceberg that is ready to rock the Indian titanic.

The euphoria shouldn’t, however, cover up the fact that the Windies haven’t been punching their weight in this format. Nine losses in the last 11 T20Is mean there is a lot of work for them to do. Even in bilateral matches, the Windies have lost 14 of their last 18 and need to get back to winning ways.

India

India have their own worries, not the least the need to revamp their stuttering middle order. In come the young guns Shreyas Iyer and Manish Pandey, as the visitors look to build a team for the future. Captain Virat Kohli wasn’t granted a leave of absence, so there’s a lot running for him on the series result as well.

India’s bowling, however, looks short of experience and quality. Especially in the fast bowling department, with Deepak Chahar, Khaleel Ahmed and Navdeep Saini set to lend support to Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Ravindra Jadeja remains their most experienced spinner, and their bowling could prove to be their Achilles heel.

Match Up

Both sides haven’t really set the ball rolling in the format off late. The Windies, however, have stacked their squad up with top T20 specialists. The likes of Gayle, Pollard and Narine are likely to punch their weight. As for India, the experiments continue and in come the next set of young batsmen. Whether it will bear fruit is something that is up for discussion, but for now the Windies have the upper edge.

History & Statistics

  • In five of the last seven T20I H2Hs, the Windies have hit the most 6s.
  • The Windies have lost nine of their last 11 T20Is, including the last three.
  • The Windies have lost their last two T20Is at this venue.
  • India have lost four of their last five T20Is, including their last three.
  • India have a 5-5 H2H record, but have won the last three.
  • Playing away from home, India have not lost consecutive T20Is since 2016-17.

Key Players

Nicholas Pooran had a breakthrough tournament in England, as he lit the ODI World Cup with exemplary performances for the Windies. He will be looking to show his aggressive side in the T20Is.

KL Rahul has a lot to prove after a below par World Cup. Thankfully, his best performances in an Indian shirt came in this format – SR of 149.23, 2x100 and 5x50 in 24 innings.
